[Note--I'm really not sure what this letter is about, but it is from my favorite periodical, and talks about orienteering and goats. Life imitates art?]

From Mr Charles Daykin.

Sir, My wife and I were most relieved to read Michael Holroyd's article "Imaginary friend" (November 8/9) on walking in the Canary Islands.

Having undertaken many of these walks over the past few years, under the guidance of the mysteriously Mercury-like Noel Rochford, we were seriously concerned that we (or he) had become delusional. Now we know we were not alone in being tested. Indeed, we too had on many occasions called out Mr Rochford's name in remote valleys but I am afraid this was usually followed by increasingly extravagant curses and occasionally heated disputes as to whose idea it was to embark on the expedition.

Nevertheless, we are very grateful to Mr Rochford for giving us so many opportunities to test our orienteering skills, our stamina and the strength of our marriage. His books are an essential accompaniment to these islands. We suspect (from their superior looks) that the local goats are also grateful for the entertainment unwittingly provided to them by Mr Rochford's followers.
