I was out walking around with my forester today and came across some tracks near a pile of logs. Snooped a little more and saw a nice hole, obviously someone's home. Snooped a little closer and found myself looking at the snout of a mama bear. The snout was moving around a bit, so she's not sleeping too hard right now. Glad it was cold enough to keep her inside, but we beat a hasty retreat anyway. The location was within 10 meters of a control site from last summer's WCOC summer picnic sprints.

Great, first it is some "wild" hawk in Ansonia, now bear. What else is there in WCOC land ?

Maybe Swampfox can ship some badgers back east.

A couple of years ago, my friend Malin and I were out checking ribbons for a course at Sid Richardson Scout Camp and came upon a bobcat's lair, wedged between two boulders. The mama ran off to distract us, but we peered in to see four or five cute little kittens, spitting and hissing at us. We told the coursesetter to move the control, but didn't tell the camp officials what we saw. In Texas, they shoot bobcats. :-(

Two days before we held the 2004 ICs at Ansonia Nature Center, we discovered there was a coyote burrow in the middle of a tight set of controls. When we investigated, mama popped out and slunk away. We were with the local ranger and headed the other way. Although the burrow was close to several routes, there was just enough in the way to keep people from getting too close, and we were able to leave everything alone. During the day, she was seen slinking around some distance away, not trying to draw any attention to the hole.

CT - the middle of Megalopolis. There is just no place to run;-}
