Nice, I was just getting ready to start browsing through Peter's archives, but I thought I might find some sucker to do it for me :)

Thanks Boris.

Are there any other good map archives online that might have some of these maps?

No.

You can find a campus map for UMSL that'll give you a rough idea of the terrain (www.umsl.edu). The campus virtual tour is pretty cool. There isn't (yet) and O' map.

The Camp Pinnacle portion of the Long-O course map is newly mapped terrain, so it's not "out there" yet. The Long O will continue (for the longer courses) on Thacher.

Ok, I did some of my own research through Peter's archives and found the following two maps of East Fork State Park from last year's Pig. I imagine we will be in a different section of the park this year though...

I also found a couple of Long Mountain from different years: 2005, 2004. And one from Lake Popolopen.

The Middle on Friday of the Pig is, afaik, in the same area as (the finish of) last year's Long race.

You can also order the old version S-F (which is still pretty good) and current version of Hawn along with your entry for Team Trials. For UMSL, you're out of luck because it's a brand new map.

Nice, I love it when organizers offer training maps in the mail with registration. I guess I'll be ordering some for the Pig and the Team Trials. Hopefully more clubs will start doing this in the future.

Its actually required that the organizers offer old maps of the venue if they exist. So, for most meets, you should be able to e-mail the registrar and expect to pay about $3.

I wonder how many people do this? I rarely do, and when I was an A meet registrar I think about 20% did.

20% is a lot higher than I would have expected. I am impressed. I didn't realize that it was required for organizers to offer old maps. It would be nice if they offered them on the registration forms like OCIN always does.

While we're at it you can find old NAOC maps available online

Sprint (mapped in 1988)
Middle (never mapped before, not available)
Long (mapped in 1978)

I can't imagine not get the old maps if you're taking the event seriously. Just part of thorough preparation.

jfredrickson:
Yeah, and drawing like 300 different routes on each map is just part of the preparation if you are taking an event seriously. Ask Tero.

Tundra/Desert:
Last year at the Alabama Fundraiser, Toni Louhisola actually figured out (approximately, but with good accuracy) the long leg of the Middle WRE based on the advance map, knowledge of the start and finish locations, and course statistics. He then proceeded to select the best, compromise route, neiher straight nor all the way around on trail. (Peter's map with the trail route.)

jfredrickson:
I read somewhere that Tero reported having drawn and mentally run every single leg in the 2005 WOC Middle Distance at some point during his preparation. I guess if you draw enough routes you will eventually get them all. It especially helps if you can narrow it down with start/finish/course information.

While we are on this topic, if anyone knows of any online copies of old maps for this year's JWOC in Lithuania, please let me know. I haven't been able to track any down yet.

I would think a rather obvious way to look for JWOC maps would be to go to organizer's website, which I did and voila! JWOC samle maps

Yes, I've seen those. I was hoping for a slightly larger version though. There is only so much you can do with a tiny segment of the map.
