From Jamie Stevenson web page (www.jamiestevenson.com):

28 Jun 2004: Orienteering to 100% perfection

Practice makes perfect. Time spent in relevant terrain is essential for success at major championships, so I have come up to Västerås for a short World Champs training camp with five other British runners. We got a solid dose of technique training today when Oli Johnson planned a course with 100 controls. A nice way to see how close you are to 100% orienteering perfection!

Oli set the course on a very detailed area that is relevant for the classic distance. He had heard that Thierry Georgiou, World Champion in the Middle Distance, often trained using long courses with lots of short legs. It sounded like a good way to improve concencentration and practice careful map reading. Not one to do things by half, Oli set about drawing a twisting course with 100 difficult control points. The theory was simple - 1% per control if you find it perfectly, how close to perfection can you get?

The training was made a bit tougher by pouring rain and cold weather (9 degrees). It became a real test of mental endurance. The three lads who took part had scores as shown below. Not too long until perfection is achieved - watch out Thierry!

Rob Baker 1.45 87% (80 controls)
Oli Johnson 1.59 92% (100 controls)
Jamie Stevenson 2.03 91% (100 controls)

--------------------------------------------------------------
Such training on relevant terrain will definitely benefit!
