Erin Olafsen text messaged me from wyoming and said that her and I made it! So, two of your four women are correct, but I dont know more! I can't yet find details on the web, but of course I'm 8 hours ahead... I should probably wait until they wake up.

I didn't see the final results, *but* Brian and Mikell are on the team. I think that you got all 4 women right.

Women's team:
Erin, Pavlina, Karen, and Sandra, with alternates Samantha, Angelika, and Hilary.
Men's team:
Brian, Eric, Mikell, and Eddie, with alternates James, Mark, and Mihai. Eric cannot go, so James will.

Trials went real well, excellent terrain and courses and close competition.

Published winner times on men's course perfectly confirm my belief of 5:00/K effective speed for NA elite (15.3x1.0+0.33x10)x5:00=1:33:00!

Congratulations to all who made it to the WOC team this year and good luck at the WOC!

Some random thoughts on the Team selections ...

* I thought the terrain was an Ok pick for the Trials. Though Wyoming was clearly much different than Sweden will be in many respects (e.g., runnability and visibility), much of the orienteering (i.e., technical contour + rock features, few significant route choice issues) was pretty similar in nature. With a lot of fast, open running, it was imperative to have good leg speed. But, there was also enough technical work to add some challenge - Mikell, Eric and I only managed to have one good day and relied on rankings for one of our scores.

* The use of the USOF rankings did not affect the outcome much this time around. In the women, the order in the trials was exactly the same as the best 2 of 3 ranking. In the men, including the rankings in the formula shuffled the top 5 a bit. Considering the trials races only, the order would have been: Eddie, Brian, Mikell, James, Eric. (James is very deserving of his spot on the team!)

* On the men's side, the top 5 were very close, especially if you consider the trials races only. There were some very good performances - Eddie's short distance and Mikell's long distance races were both very impressive.

* Erin completely dominated on the women's side - she threw out a score of 104.75! Way to go.

* Personally, to have a near-perfect race and get beaten tells me two things: i) we have a good team! and ii) I'm a bit behind the 8-ball with my training. Preparation for Sweden starts now!
