So I am off for a quick 7 days in Hawaii starting on Saturday and I was wondering if there is any orienteering there? I saw on one post back in 2005 that someone mentioned a map but thats about all I know. Can anyone give me a helping hand (permanent courses?, events? or even adventure races?).
Cheers,
Jeremy

I don't know if the controls will be there, but you shouldn't get too lost on this course.

Let me know how you make out ;)

Every time I watch an episode, I wish I had a map of the island. It seems like everyone on the show knows where all of these stations and camps are relative to one another. But I don't.

The Kapiolani Park map is a joke. It's mostly a street map of Honolulu with no contour lines, on which the only part that's fieldchecked is the park itself, which is too small for a sprint.

In LOST they even mentioned orienteering once. Here are some maps of the LOST island http://lostmap.blogspot.com/

I remember the reference to orienteering in LOST Season 1. A pair of characters came across one of the others sitting in the forest studying a strange sort of map he had found.
"What are you doing?" they asked.
"I'm orienteering." came back his mildly sarcastic reply.
The scene lost touch with reality for me when they didn't ask "what's that?" But then again they were on a flight from Australia.

Yep, that was John Loke asking Sayid what he was doing. Sayid had a needle floating on a cup of water and John gives him a very basic compass...

Yeah I'm a LOST nerd!

Jeremy,
Let us know if you find anything good - I'm hoping to be headed out that way for a conference this summer (oh darn, have to go work in Honolulu...) and I figure if I'm there sans kids, I'm going to get some good workouts in. Surf and turf, here I come!

from a friend who lived there:

"There is very little organized orienteering in Hawaii?and no permanent courses. There are occasional adventure races, and lots of triathlon, mountain biking, and running events. You could google, ?mid-pacific road runners?, ?Hawaii ultimate running (H.U.R.T.)?, or ?island triathlon and bike? for event schedules. Ocean kayaking, surfing, and mountain biking are all possible?depending on which island. Trail running or hiking is particularly fun?with incredible variety. Check out the ?Na Ala Hele Hawaii Trails? website."

Hawai'i is a throwback to colonial times, since there is little land available for things like exploring or orienteering. Big land barons seem to own it all and it is closed to the public.

When I've been traveling and looking to get in some O' practice, I've had good luck with local government GIS and some of the campus maps from universities (some are really good and some are terrible).

Google something like the name of the local government (try both city and county) and you'll often find things like this:

It doesn't take much work to fieldcheck a small urban park.
