thank you ... didn't subtract the 15 second hold up waiting for a JROTC group to give up the punch at #6.... with e-punch would have been faster !
I went with my bullet proof outfit and didn't get to badly scratched up or maybe it was just luck and the course avoided the worst prickly ash.
Approaching one ROTC group at CP I picked up the pace and put my game face on hoping they would step aside. It worked... that time.
There were somewhere between 10 and 15 people milling about at #11... I ran in and ringed the punch string. No one argued.
Oh, and excellent job on the goals. The course design helped with that, e.g. 5-6. Part of my preparation is to envision Sand Dunes with no prickly ash. Close your eyes - doesn't that make you feel... so. darn. good?
Good job Ian. As for the forest being quite nice in places, not sure what you mean. It was quite nice on the east side of the big lake/marsh, that is open. But beyond that it's prickly, thick, strewn with deadfall, or all of the above.
You are right about the nice course. Liked it much.
Notice I didn't mention any other legs!
For this meet I only have a few small scratches on my arms (compared with usual Sand Dunes bloody mess requiring tender care on the face and long sleeves to cover the arms at the office for a week.)
I guess I was reading the map very closely and totally avoided dark green, but also tried to use trails and open areas, then mapped white areas as much as possible. It seemed to work pretty well. The deadfall is tedious but with strong running I usually jump right over . ..... It still is a far cry from white woods in other parts of the country !
good on ya Ian!
a smart measured effort that got it done......cunning running exemplified.....
I also saw Leif taking off at the start and wondered if the Junior Bronze medal Biathlon World Champion would use his "steady effort/shoot well" biathon strategy at Sand Dunes would also provide ToddP with additional heartache..havent checked the results yet....anyone want to clue me in on the results on Red?...
Y'all need to come down to St. Louis one of these days and see what REAL open woods look like. S-F next weekend and I expect the flatter legs to be run at under 6:00/K.
I too was less bloody than I expected. So we probably have a general consensus that we came out less bloody than expected. Do we need group therapy, or better course setters that can meet or exceed expectations? Is there a psychologist in the house?
The results were something like:
LN - 55?
PFC 59
AK ??
IH 1:06
WD 1:10 ?
TP 1:15
the group therapy was provided at around 4:30 pm when I came back from control retrieval on the AR course . Mike and Julia had a nice cold one each for Pete and I . I got more therapy on the drive home with a stop at DQ !
Actual results (i have the cards) were : LeifN 54:35 , PFC 59:25 , AndreK 1:02:40 , IH 1:06:10 WillD 1:11:11 ToddP 1:15:28 CarlN 1:22:00, JimM 1;26:00 and DarrynK 1:31:00.....
Other : no blood on the punch cards ! LN and DK had the most pristine cards and punched all dead center in the boxes .. from the look of PFC's card he must have gone deep in the swamp. !
Interesting that the fast and slow guy have the cleanest cards. We know why mine was clean, just slacking. Leif must just be amazing to go that fast and keep the card clean too.
Sorry I couldn't help with control retrieval. I'd left K at home with two different kid events to handle on her own, so I couldn't hang out any longer (and I need to get out to Afton to vet sometime this week). Thanks for going above and beyond.
LN 54:35.....wow!........
Sounds like a good day. Nice job, Ian. Good to see more new names around the top. That will make us all better.
