Discussion: Control 1 on Red Long - collective delirium?

Looking at the splits, more than half of the elite women, and a huge chunk of the whole field blew number 1 on Red Long.
Given that it was so close to a bend in the trail, what happened is a bit of a mystery to me.
What made people make such huge mistakes on such a short leg?
At first I thought the change of scale from 1:10 000 to 1:15 000, but then there are enough men that also blew that control that I dont think the scale can be blamed (the men remained on 1:10 000 while the women were given 1:15 000 for the WRE).

A few points I can think of, but I'd be curious to hear other people's theories...
- did anyone actually look for a 7m tall cliff? (that was on the description sheet (clue sheet)
- the start triangle on the ground was right near the edge of the marked triangle on the map, making the first bend in the trail a lot closer than expected
- it was pretty green in there...
- first control of the 3rd day, people tired?

It just seems very odd to me to see a ton of 10' splits on that one, and a lot of 6min+ in the elite woman....

Anybody has any theories on that or was it just a strange fluke?

Personally, I just ran off the bend at the wrong angle (which is easy to do) and then it was very thick and steep, so relocating was difficult and moving was slow.

Good point, moving was bloody slow in there, makes sense that the recovery would take longer.

Congratulations on your selection by the way. Well done!
