I am planning on sending a note out to the board, suggesting that we do a total re-do (not just an update) of the Webster map. So I agree with you. Setting courses was a bit frustrating because it was obvious there are many problems with the map, and I just didn't have time to fix many of them. Compounding the problem is that the original base map was just a USGS topo map, with a lot of field checking over the years to get it to where it is. The problem is, if the foundation isn't good (if things are fundamentally incorrect on the base map), it is REALLY hard to make things truly "right". Kind of like having a house foundation that isn't level, or something like that. So I sympathize about the map inadequacies ..
But I think you're being to tough on yourself. Reading your report, it sounds like you did fine on a large majority of the controls. And on the ones you had problems with, my guess is that even then, you were doing things right most of the time but had a few errors that cost a lot. So maybe overall, you did things right 90+% of the time, or so. Try not to get discouraged, it's a tough sport, and most people take a while to get comfortable with it.
Thanks. I'm glad we did the epunch, so that I can see how I stood up on the ones that were OK. I'll take the small victories where I can...
I think the ruin you were looking for is a fenced in area with some equipment in it by #12. It's so grown over that you could miss it.
It looks like you had trouble at the end of the park where I have messed up a number of times (#10). This time I was careful and actually got 10 and then totally messed up on 11. This is at least the second time I've ended up by a farmhouse that I'm not sure is on the map. It has a pond, and I think it's somewhere in the twilight zone. I lost a lot of time on that one.
If you feel bad you can look at my splits. You'll feel a little better. I like your philosophy...we get to log in more time! : )
