I am not familiar with that method of navigation, and it seems suspect to me. Following fast dudes is fine, but what if the fast dude is fastly running away from the track? What happens then?

Well Dirk Gently is the character in a Douglas Adams book "the long dark teatime of the soul". the concept is that if you're trying to get to the motorway, just follow the car in front of you because it's probably going there too. It fails for him in the book though, because the person he follows ends up just getting spooked and tries to get away from the creepy following car.
