US Individual Champs, Bend, Oregon
August 26-28, 2005

To aid you in setting your training and savings plans for next year (and to make your work day less productive), the http://www.forestrunner.com/orca/uschamps2005”>US Champs website has been updated with terrain pictures, course distances, and map samples.

Our WRE consultant, Vladimir Gusiatnikov, calls this forest very friendly. Namely, the forest has no brush or thorns, and the forest floor is nice and soft for running. Personally, I have been doing a lot of running around in this forest without gaiters, and my legs are still just as beautiful as they were a couple of months ago.

It is very fast terrain, which is reflected in the longer than usual course distances. Similar to the Telemark meet, the day 1 red and blue courses will be on the short side and day 2 will be longer.

In case you don’t make it out to the website, I’ll call out an unusual thing that we are planning. On day 1, we will provide a double scale map to all competitors (1:7500 for red and blue, 1:5000 for the rest) of a small super-detailed area, which we feel has the potential to cause problems for some people with weaker eyesight. It will still be on the regular scale maps with a notation indicating the blown up area. http://okansas.blogspot.com”>Mike Eglinski’s blog has a very timely article on October 28 about a German World Cup race, which did the same thing with their maps.

Hope you can make it out our way for some very fun orienteering!
