| Cristina: | I feel tempted to respond, "Yes, ma'am!"
I spent the morning sitting at the finish, taking pictures and ... icing my ankle. You'd be proud. The good news is that it's been feeling better and better all day. By the time I got to Portland I was able to walk practically like normal and with very little pain. My ankle is still about twice as big as it should be, but I'm confident that this isn't that serious. |

| Nikolay: | What I always do after I roll my ankle and it swells, and it really helps the next day and weeks.
I make a compress before going to bed and sleep with it. It is basically similar to hot/cold patches but works much better. Use a cotton cloth (I use part of old t-shirt) and wet it with icy watter. drain it a bit but leave it pretty wet. Wrap it around you ankle, then wrap a plastic bag or two over it. Next wrap several layers of newspaper (not kidding) and finally one or two towels to keep it worm. Secure it with a string or two. Works wanders if you do it the first night after you sprain the ankle. I roll my ankle once in a while. Almost always I am ready to run the next day when I do that compress, even after bad swellings.Couple of years ago I was lazy and did not do it and had problems running for more than a month. Hope you get well fast. |

| LKohn: | Last spring at the NYS State Basketball tournament (Rick mentors a young man whose team participated) one of the boys rolled his ankle badly in the Friday evening game. They took him to the college sports med folks...treatment included a tight wrap and ice water bath. He played the next day and you wouldn't have known that he had been injured. I haven't turned my ankle lately so I can't speak from personal experience but this does seem to make sense.
Yes ma'am??? ...probably should be more like yes, mom...will try not to hover. |

| Cristina: | Haha, don't worry, the "ma'am" bit is just work instinct, nothing personal. ;-) |

| cmpbllv: | One of my better docs was an AF officer out at Hanscom for my only ankle sprain...after 24 hours of regular icing and NSAIDS (for 2 weeks), she put me on a regimen of twice daily 10 mins ice / 10 mins heat, alternating. Big bucket of ice water, big pan of very warm water. Seemed to work pretty well.
Then I got exercises - writing the alphabet with my toes, scrunching a towel under my toes etc. I now have a theraband that I would use, too - gift from the PT folks rehabbing my shins (related to the weakness in my ankle from that old sprain)...good times. Good luck! |

| szurcher: | Wraping it during the night is important. Wrap you ankle tight at about a 90° angle or a little more. The reason that this is important is so that the tendons can heal in the correct place and length. While sleeping most people have their foot relaxed in a pointed toe position, but that will mean that the tendons will heal all stretched out or just take longer to heal. The other reason is swelling, getting the swelling down is very important, otherwise you can get some annoying pain in your Achilles tendon later. |
