If you thought the 840s were barebones, the 790s are even a trimmed down version of those. I'd be scared to run in those in rough technical terrain.
You should take a peak at the 940s, if you can't find the 940 trail to try on (had to special order mine), see if you can find road 940s for the feel. Exact same shoe except the sole. I haven't been this happy about a trail shoe in a long time (that's actually really sad;)
