Discussion: Splits
in: toddp; toddp > 2009-09-12;
I created splits for the event, but my map disintegrated. I am not sure if I can get leg distances. If you measure them let me know.
Did Tom MSP? or is that speculation?
Sorry, I have no splits to contribute.
No speculation on the MSP. Tom missed one punch but testified that he found the control.
Yeah - tough to know what to do with a non-punch like that.... Would love to give him an official finish, but not sure if that sets a bad standard. :o(
I tried to take splits as well, but only managed accurately through CP 3 or 4. After I started to get into the zone/map, I realized that I was forgetting to hit the lap timer on my watch. Guess it's not routine enough for me yet.... E-punch is the bomb-diggity. We should have it on the red course at all meets (my 2 cents)!
da bomb diggity.... word.
Do you have any more results? Sounds like OB edged you out by a little. How did Andre run? Molly?
did TP forget to punch once he found it?
He said he could not find the punch. I presume that it was there but just tangled up in the bag somehow. If the punch was there and subsequent runners found it, then his official result should be MSP. Rules is rules.
Unofficially, I consider his result quite valid for comparison. Had he disciplined himself to find the punch he would have only taken a few seconds more.
ha!...you just gave me a "early start" strategy..... : )
at a local meet we would allow that he could not find the punch .....provided that he had a good explanation of his route in and out and where he looked
Yes, Owen rocked me by 1-2 minutes. Good effort on his part. I know I likely lost that time early in my run, so probably should have done a bit of O-practice in the past few weeks (since PQ).
I now have classes Monday-Thursday during the time that I formerly trained (3-7pm), so I'll have to find an alternative.
Tuesdays are a no-go all night, since I have class from 6pm to 9:45pm (which is why I've been missing OTNT). Doesn't the U of M know that I'm busy that night?
I'm working on a Masters in Geographic Information Science (GIS).
My classes are:
-Remote Sensing (Aerial Photography)
-Principles of GIS (Intro GIS)
-Numerical Spatial Analysis (Stats for Geography peeps)
Tom says that I'm working on a Masters in Adventure Racing! Although looking at aerial/topo maps more probably won't hurt, learning the physics behind everything tends to be a bit dry....
P.S. I have to choose 1-2 topics for aerial map study over time, so if anyone has any thoughts as to how a potential project could benefit MNOC, I would be glad to hear it. My initial thought was to study how the introduction of invasive species (particularly buckthorn) has altered the vegetative communities of our parks. I bet that we could see a general increase in crowding of vegetation over the past 40 years....
how about: How to detect potential black bear habitat and populations from aerial photgraphs....
Stephen... that one is easy. here is how to predict potential for black bear encounters.... Survey the names of the local casinos.... No aerial photos needed.
now who is the smarty pants?.....
If Tom didn't punch, he should receive a MSP, plain and simple. The rules must stand unadulterated. Punishment must be swift and harsh.
Did anyone else notice he finished just in front of me?
Meet Tom. He couldn't find the control punch when he found the bag and even though everyone else found it. Tom...
HTFU!

So I see there has been a slight amount of discussion regarding the CP 14 non-punch on my score card. I'll do my best to explain:
Ok. We know Jerritt Johnston to be a great orienteering athlete. We know him to have a powerful personality and great leadership qualities. We know him to be quite fit this summer (indeed both he, and molly, testify that training regularly helps him in other areas of his life as well). And we know him to own a navigation based entrepreneurial venture.
Unfortunately, we all also know that despite the fact I can't train due to a back issue, I consistently, unequivocally, destroy him at all major orienteering events. It's embarrassing, frankly. And as his friend, I'm embarrassed for him.
So, as a gentleman who is out there to enjoy the woods, the map, their challenge, and nothing more--I agreed that I would from now on go to all CP's, not punch one of them, turn in my punchcard, and let the rumor mill produce what it may. This agreement creates a gray area, sufficient to justify the comment posted above. So there you have it.
Oh yeah Jerritt, you asked a question: Yes everyone noticed. Now, Don't let it be two Possum Trot's in a row!
But yeah obviously, on the MNOC official scoring on the website, we're going to have to default to what our wise president says on the matter.
Ok, as much as I hate to do it, I'll be serious: I did look for that punch for a small while. I looked below (always first) and inside it (always second), and tapped on one side (should have been all three), and in my hurried hypoxia, decided deleteriously that it was not fixed to the flag. I then proceeded to looked for red objects on the ground below and near the punch. I didn't see it, so knowing that I could explain my approach and it's location, I scampered away cognizant that I had a good run going that I feared would be effected by something outside of my control. I was wrong. It was there and I should have punched.
In the end, I concluded that it must have been on the opposite side from my approach, on the outside of the control, on the opposite side, a side that I likely could not see and did not tap. It's the only explanation I can come up with. I know I had, for me, a great run (arguably my best yet) and am ok with however others see it or how it gets reported. Shawn did an awesome job with every aspect of the course and I was lucky to run it.
From now on, I am starting a rigorous training program with one sole purpose: to HTFU. Possum Trot is only 87 days away!
Did he just go there with the PTrot standings?!
Oh yes he did!!!
It's totally on now! Jerritt vs. TPain PTrot rematch in 86 days.....
Two men enter, one man leaves!
;o)
P.S. I think our wise president stated that "at a local meet we would allow that he could not find the punch .....provided that he had a good explanation of his route in and out and where he looked." If Tom would like to explain the control area and how he entered and left the control (maybe route choice to controls before/after), that would be sufficient for a local meet. Rules is Rules unless you're in a club where everyone trusts each other. Is MNOC one of those clubs? I hope so, but my opinion is just one. I definitely hear the Rules is Rules mantra though too, so I see where that side is coming from. I think the only difference is whether or not Tom is given an official time on the MNOC website, which really matters little in the long run. Would be nice to compare times though.
P.P.S. I missed a control earlier this year at Afton, but I don't want credit for it since I ran past it completely - Oops!
Blah blah babycakes blah blah.
I couldn't quite follow his ramblings, but Tom seems a wee bit defensive. If he wants to hide behind technicalities and rely on his ability to follow, so be it.
I choose to take the high road. nah nah nah nah nah.
We shall meet before PT in the open field of battle of the Kettle Moraine Northern unit, if he can HTFU enough to get there.
so let the fall battle begin -- 3 rounds - ....Ripley , Kettle Moraine N unit, PTrot (with or without 12 yr old (now 13 ) in the mix ) ...... should be fun to watch TomP and JJ slug it out
I wrote Jerritt a text after I posted to AP that said the following: "I know your post was totally in jest, and I'm sure you'll read mine as the same, but just so you know, people are going to want, perhaps even need, us to be arch rivals from now on."
I had no idea how quickly it would happen! But yeah, I suppose I'll run with it, could be good motivation.
We all know this is a three way. When Ian wrote: "should be fun to watch TomP and JJ slug it out", he failed to type his next thought: "after I waltz in ahead of both of them!"
BTW - Who is the 13 year old?
Pete,
That is outstanding. I go out of town for a few days...maybe to do some secret PT training and look what happens.
I will gladly accept the Fall challenge, but it is looking less and less likely that I will be at Camp Ripley. Molly is going to be in Boston that weekend and I will be on kid patrol. I may look at some one day options, but it may not happen.
Tom. wherever...whenever...bring it. But if you bring it, you better bring it all.
It's funny how the possum looks like it's being electrocuted. That was unintentional.
I think we have underestimated you marketing savvy.........
I may look at some one day options
I am still hoping to get a carpool going early Sunday morning for Minnegoat. I hope you can make it, Jerritt. Darryn, are you still game for that? Anyone else?
It's funny how the possum looks like it's being electrocuted. That was unintentional.
Possum schmossem. The whole thing is hilarious. I chuckle every time I see it. The use of the Hubble Deep Field to add "universal" drama especially.
An epic, universe-spanning battle.
Cool graphic pfc but can you remove it please. Somehow the PETA folks got wind of this and are leaving nasty voice mails about how uncool it is to depict the killing of harmless possums.
yeah, and JJ appears to be laughing at said possums horrifiing delimma.....kinda heartless...
ToddP...I am a carpool candidate.....my desire is to leave immediately after finishing....
That's the plan. Depart MSP super early, swoop in for the 'goat, and leave as soon as all search and rescue operations are complete.
Is anyone else hoping that Dick will still move the Possum Trot back to the usual weekend? Is this too much to ask? I'm super bummed for the date change.... I guess I'll still make the PTrot, but other activities were on my calendar as well. I still can't believe he changed the date because of an A-meet in California that I'm sure basically no one will be going to. Ian - can you send him a heartfelt pres-to-pres e-mail from us? Is anyone else from MNOC happier with the later date?
The possum...it gets 1 more week. Otherwise, I have no opinion really.
