He was, to put it mildly, pissed at the "sissy way" he hurt himself.

I also play competitive volleyball (which can actually get somewhat aerobic at times). The worst injury I've ever gotten was a horrible ankle sprain that I'm still recovering from from almost two years ago.

And then most people are shocked to find out that I didn't suffer that injury from the "more unsissy" sports that I do, orienteering, basketball, ultimate, etc. I feel like I have to defend the sport of volleyball because I think most of my injuries from the past five years have come from volleyball: turned ankles, jammed fingers, a sprained wrist, and several contusions and bruises.

turned his ankle while serving.

Having said that, I can't imagine doing this... was he jump-serving?

Nope, he just stepped forward and landed funny on his foot. This was not an injury sustained during intense v-ball play. I played volleyball in high school (though I wasn't very good) and I would characterize what we were doing as a spectacularly mild and un-aerobic form of the sport.
