Brad Whitmore told me a body was found in the forest at the Camp Mack meet today. The story I heard is Bob Finke (DVOA) discovered it nearby two of the controls. The police were notified. Apparently it had been there a while. Anoyne else have details or interesting stories from teh meet today? (I wasn't there) J-man?

Lucky you.

Well, as to the body. One theory (disproven by the fact that I'm writing this) is that the body was mine - that I succumbed to blood loss from the repeated lacerations from fields of conertina wire-like vines. Or it could have been anyone else that attempted a blue or red course.

Another theory is that the body could have belonged to a meet director that suffered the wrath of one of the above noted competitors.

However, the truth of the matter is likely something else altogether. I actually did not speak to Bob but just heard second hand from the meet staff about the poor individual.

Just as we were helping some guy who had a totally nasty bleeding puncture wound on his knee.... Bob came back and said he thought he saw a body, so he and Brad went back out to verify that yes it really was one. At that point we tried to find the ranger (never did find him) and Jim Eagleton drove out to where he could get cell reception and called the police. Brad, one of the Snyder boys, and I went back in to mark the way up so Jim and the police could find their way in. (And pick up the two controls in that area.) Apparently the jeans on the body were visible from the orange control if people had been looking. It was a skull with no skin really on it, and a shirt that looked all bloated out, and jeans. The lower legs were bent behind at the knees and the arms were either behind it or inside the shirt. The detective and Jim were coming up as we were leaving, and stopped to ask us a few questions, and another officer was coming up just as we were leaving the park.

There were also bottles painted orange hung around the park as controls for a course I guess the boy scouts set up. They had real o punches with them. Someone said they saw one of these bottles with a bone handled knife stuck in it, and I believe Jim passed that info on to the police as well, not sure if it's related.

Incidently, right back at the parking lot as Brad and I were returning, there were more police and a fire truck as a car had hit a telephone pole. The pole was broken and the car was pretty smashed up, airbags out and stuff. I saw it had Maryland tags but didn't recognize it as anyone I know...

So yeah, eventful...

Back when we mapped S-F, a body was discovered. Apparently, it was quite a bit of work to figure out who it was - turned out to be a mail order bride from Russia and the husband had claimed that she had simply gone back home. The investigation would up being featured on the crime show "The New Detectives."

I believe the woman from S-F was from southeast Asia (Vietnam?), not Russia. The husband was a scoutmaster. The mapper who found the body (Rami Pitkanen) didn't say anything until he was safely home in Finland, not knowing what complications he might get into. Then he sent a copy of the fieldnotes with the location of the body marked -- incorrectly. But Teena Orling was able to find it anyway.

Sara Mae Berman also found a body when she was mapping Pine Hill, just north of Boston.

ummm... i'd be slightly carfeul about what gets written here... i love the stories but it's not a car park and people could be listening... try not to get people in trouble unnecessarily

Latest update -- there was no ID on the body. They are still not sure if it is male or female, but say it is a large-statured person and does not match up with any known missing persons in the area. Police were out there all night and are apparently investigating around the camp for clues. An autopsy is going to be performed.

As far as other bodies go -- Ed Scott also found a body while mapping French Creek (Central map I believe)
