| PG: | Sounds like you guys did great! And you're still alive.... |

| skdewitt: | You did do great. We hang around for a long time but never looked at the complete results (in our dazed state I guess) and so didn't know how other teams did. We had 1710 points (also 34 controls) but stayed out all night. Planned to sleep in the woods a little but it was too cold. Probably had about 2 hours of break time total. Did the entire eastern loop and then most of the middle. We'd love to see your control order. |

| PBricker: | The drive home was the scary part!
The good rest helped us keep our productivity rate high, and we were only out about 3-4 hours in the dark. Here's our route: 601,308,607,705,311,805,410,608,507,806,413,609,704,412, 803,504,605,307,406,703,602,HH,302,414,503,301,401,502, 801,303,701,304,404,603,402,HH Instead of "and you're still alive", perhaps to Susie and Rick I should say, "and you're still married!" (I find it challenging enough having my wife as a doubles partner in tennis.) |

| Charlie: | Your strategy of getting some rest made a lot of sense. You had a very productive second session. We had time left at the end, but not the resolve, so dropped off the loop of 306,802,501 that we had intended to do between 604 and 606. |

| PBricker: | It's strange, even though I got only about 2 hours of restless sleep, when the alarm went off at 3:00, and I had some coffee and bagel at the hash house, it felt like the beginning of a new day (the easy day! only 7 hours!), instead of the the long drawn out end of a single event. The mind and body fell for the ruse.
You guys had an excellent start. Probably the long miss on the bingo control (we didn't go there) took some wind out of your sails. Can you believe there were virtually no bugs out there? Only the occasional stinging nettle to contend with. |

| Charlie: | Ah, coffee! I was thinking about coffee from around 1 am on. First thing I did when I got to the HH at 9:15am was suck down a quick two cups.
The bingo control at 804 was pretty discouraging-I don't think we ever recovered our good humor after that. The only place we encountered enough stinging nettle to be nasty was around 508, which you skipped. We had to slog through a few hundred meters of unrelieved waist high nettles and were getting pretty uncomfortable. Fortunately, the annoying stings only lasted as long as we were there, though. The generally cool and comfortable weather was quite fine. Visually, the place I liked best was the spur S of 606, another place you didn't go. It was quite high and quite open. |

| PBricker: | The worst field of stinging nettle we encountered was in the reentrant above 504: not sure how you missed them. Everyone else said the sting goes away in 5 minutes or so, but I seemed to feeling it for at least 20.
The long narrow ridge heading out to 404 was an impressive geological wonder. Though I enjoyed it more from the top then the side. Saw a lot of deer, including a fawn in the open area near 413 that couldn't have been more than a week old. Another fawn was hiding in the bushes on the climb out of 801. I passed by no more than 10 feet away, causing her to scamper. Not sure who scared who more. |

| Charlie: | Well. now I feel better. The only real disagreement J-J and I had was leaving 504. I wanted to climb up to the trail on the way to 605, but he prevailed and we went down the streambed straight south. Saved climb but lots of tripping and falling and one memorable loss of my shoe in the muck. If I missed a nettle field, that's some compensation. Actually, I found the nettle a rather minor annoyance, but this was all at night and I might have liked nettle less in the dark.
We saw two nice porcupines scurrying along the trail in front of us on our way from 412 to 803 (long way around because it was close to dark and we wanted a good attack point). Also a fawn peeking at us in the dark near 804 (and maybe laughing at us, since we were having such a hard time). Didn't actually see that one, just the eyes in the headlamps. We enjoyed the thrushes at dusk, the barred owls at night, and the veeries and ovenbirds at dawn. |

| Charlie: | Results are up, and I was comparing splits. You guys were really whipping us on the common legs. Very speedy! |
| # Posted 2006-06-14 08:51:06 | |
| PBricker: | But you were doing those common legs a couple hours later than we were; and we had the thought of a hot meal at the hash house as motivation! |
