BTW, what does backbana mean? I interpret it as "back-course" but I'm guessing that's not right.

But, somehow back course has a nice ring to my ears. There is a colloquial American notion of "out back" which implies toughness, roughness to me ... which seems to be a good quality for a training circuit as well.
