I've posted the current standings of the 2005 Sprint Series.

Anyone paying close attention will notice that the point system has changed. Basically, the Commissioner has decided that he wanted more points, and maybe a few other people would also. So the new system is --

Local events -- 30 points to the winner down to 1 point for 30th place.
Regional events -- 40 points to the winner down to 1 point for 40th place.
National events -- 50 points to the winner down to 1 point for 50th place.

The Commissioner has also decided that this is it, the point system won't change again (unless he changes his mind again, which might happen if he comes in 41st in a regional event...).

Peter, the chart does not render properly on my browser (IE 6.0.2) - It looks like the row height is less than the text height, therefore I only see the top half of each letter... Others may also have this problem... Since it looks to be exported from Excel, it should be a fairly easy tweak...

Should be better now, if not let me know (pg@crocker.com). At least it looks ok on IE (and Safari, which is my usual browser) on my Mac.

I love the sprint series idea - I especially like how we're racked and stacked versus *everyone* in our gender, not just those in our age class. How fun. (Translation: it's motivating!)

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem too likely that I'd be able to make any of the events currently on the calendar...which means it's time for everyone to set sprint courses for their local clubs! (Especially if your club is in Texas.)

Next events in the Sprint Series are:

1. The Sharon Woods Sprints, just outside Cincinnati, Saturday Jan. 29. Three sprints, all with e-punching, The "middle" and the "hard" ones both count for the Series (both are 30-pointers).

2. The DVOA / Team Training Weekend. Three sprints on Saturday March 5 in Norristown, PA, all count for the series (all 3 are 40-pointers).

3. The BAOC Sprint Champs in Richmond, CA on Sunday March 6. A prologue and a chase final. After due consideration (and despite no bribes being offered), the Commissioner has upgraded the final to a 40-point event. The prologue is a 30-pointer.

So far we have 18 sprints on the schedule. There is room for lots more. Seems like a favorite way to schedule them is either a couple (or three) in a day, or hooked on to some other event. For Team folks, this can also be a pretty good way to put on a Team fundraiser.

I would be willing to host and set courses for a Sprint at my place, assuming I can get the map done. J-J started on it a while ago, but hasn't had much time for it lately. I've talked with George Walker about helping to finish it. Presumably it would work best in conjunction with a nearby A meet, but I haven't checked the schedule.

I don't have time for extensive mapping these days, but I could give a hand to get a map done - fieldwork or cartography.

Maybe combine with an event at Brainard? A couple years ago I toyed with the idea of making a 1:5000 park-o style map at the south end by adding some of the open areas east of the parking area - would make a nice mix of fast open woods and rolling open areas with spectator opportunities.

Brainard would be tough: getting permission, very busy anyway, lots of logging.

Charlie - I'm thinking Nepaug might be interesting in our area or a hilly one at Sundown?

Hmmm.. I wonder if I can fly out to BAOC on the night of March 5th, to rack up as many as 100+ points in one weekend... :)

On the BAOC event, the Chase is, well, a chase, based on Prologue times. Are scores in the Chase based on total finish time, or time just in the Chase? (If it's just the Chase time alone, I might be tempted to sandbag the Prologue in order to have a really nice train of people to pass in the Chase... Although perhaps not too tempted, as winning the thing outright, as I have done once, is pretty cool.)

The way I figure it, you can get 120 points for winning all three DVOA/Team training sprints on March 5, then hustle out to BAOC and get another 70 for winning both of them the next day. That ought to put you in the lead....

Yes, the BAOC chase start times are based on the prologue, and the BAOC sprint chanps are based on the total for the two events, but for the Sprint Series, each counts separately. Yup, you can sandbag, but why not just win both outright. Then you'd really get all the bragging rights.

The Sprint Series Standings have been updated to reflect the two sprints last weekend at Sharon Woods near Cincinnati, and lots of Ohio orienteers have moved to the top of the standings, led by long-time USOF official Mike Minium.

For Minium it represents a dramatic comeback from his accident at the Superbum Sprint in Laramie in August, when he lost 5 teeth in an encounter with the bedrock.

For all other wannabe sprinters, the message is clear -- if you want to be among the best, you have to sprint fast, and sprint often. Has your club got any sprints on its schedule? To get a sprint on the Sprint Series schedule, just let me know about it at least 20 days in advance.

Updated standings (thanks to Assistant Commissioner Boris Granovskiy) are posted at http://users.crocker.com/~pg/team/sprintstandings....

A report on the sprints at Sharon Woods from Meet Director Matt Robbins, plus results and the maps, are posted at http://www.ocin.org/results/050129SW.html

Next events in the Sprint Series are March 5th, the Team/DVOA training weekend (open to anyone), with three sprints offered, and March 6th, the BAOC Sprint Champs, with two sprints on the schedule.
