vmeyer: Updated USOF rankings have been posted and include the January 2010 GNC, and the deletion of the 2009 GNC.

For the December 31, 2009 rankings, corrections due to scaling issues were made to the White, Orange, and Brown courses. See those courses for more detail. No places were changed, just the scores relative to 100.

It is not too late to opt for a virtual patch for 2009. Gold, Silver and Bronze Ranking Patches will be mailed out this weekend. Every year, some patch winners return their patches or contact us and ask us not to send them, so this year we are providing an eco-friendly "virtual" patch option. If you are interested in this option, please go to [link removed]. You will be asked to provide an email address and instead of receiving a real patch and a hard copy of the letter, we will email you a copy of the letter and a virtual patch. Requests for virtual patches will be collected through January 31, 2010 February 5, 2010. Thanks!

Thanks to the 20% of you who requested this option! The virtual rankings patches were emailed out to the 64 recipients yesterday. Here is a sample of what they received. Reception has been positive.

For those of you waiting for your patch to come through the mail, then the wait will be a little longer. We're blaming it on the snow.

feet: And less effort to put in the trash than the traditional patches! ;)

j-man: A great innovation as measured by its ability to increase happiness over such a range of utility functions.

chitownclark: I've always wondered at American orienteers' reluctance to flaunt their winnings. In 20 years, out of hundreds of ranking patches mailed out, I think I've only seen one or two orienteers actually wearing them in any way. Now we're completely eliminating the actual patches...and any chance of public recognition.

In contrast, at the Fin5 they hand out daily award ribbons to the top 5 places in each age group. I remember many guys strutting around the Start area the next day with these little award ribbons proudly clipped to their race numbers...I think they get there early. Certainly no one seems shy about displaying their awards.

Anyone care to speculate why this difference?

Cristina: How many people compete at the Fin5?

What percentage of those people earn ribbons? What percentage of USOF orienteers earn patches?

Just asking.

Sandy: @chitownclark: As stated above, please note that the virtual option is just that - an option - and completely voluntary. We are happy to mail the real thing to anyone who earned one.

Cristina: Also, people can be just as proud of their virtual patch as of the real thing. You still earned it, you just saved resources. I thought chitownclark would be all about saving resources...

chitownclark: No...absolutely no criticism intended here. If no one is wearing the actual patches, then by all means...get rid of them! Sandy and Valerie have done a wonderful job updating the concept.

I'm just a bit confused about why no one here wore those patches. I've been waiting 12 years to sew on my Gold M55+ patch the moment they became fashionable. But I'm still waiting....

BorisGr: Actually, I think part of it is that an end-of-year ranking just doesn't feel like as big an accomplishment as a good result in a particular race. I think I would be a lot more excited, say, winning the US Champs [for the sake of argument let's pretend there is just one of those] than being ranked 1st on blue.

vmeyer: And, hopefully, the non-virtual patches will be mailed soon. We did attempt to have the actual patches, envelopes, labels, letters, and stamps all in one place at one time, but we have been thwarted twice by the big snow (or whatever they are calling it).

stevegregg: I'd be much more likely to look at my patches with pride if they had the year on them. I just went to my room and counted 11 silver patches, all identical. So why not request a virtual patch this year--who needs a 12th one, exactly the same as the previous 11?

Whenever my real patch arrived in the past, I always wondered how big a bulk order USOF placed for patches, and how many years ago that was. Are they still giving out patches that were originally ordered 15+ years ago???
