| jeffw: | I would have reacted the same way. In fact I would have said (in a big viking voice), "ARE YOU CHALLENGING ME?!" Then have fun trying and failing (or not). |

| chitownclark: | Well being a couple years older than PG, I might have accepted the gentle hint, and taken a seat. At some point we all must accept our increasing fragility as we age. According to The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons...
...Hip fracture rate doubles every 5 years or so after the age of 50 years... |

| jjcote: | What was it that you were trying to do? |
| # Posted 2010-02-02 22:21:51 | |
| PG: | Put your feet maybe a foot from a wall, facing the wall. Do a forward fold, i.e. bend forward at the waist, except the wall is in the way, so sort of twist to one side to get so your head is down and the back of your head is against the wall, and then work to get your upper back against the wall too. Gives a really good stretch to the back of the body.
I think I actually made a little more progress than she figured. This was all just a short break in our otherwise quite vigorous operation. |

| PG: | Clark, realizing that the day is not yet over, but so far at least if I was going to break a hip today it would not have been at yoga class, but when I was running along a downhill/sidehill icy trail while most of my attention was on changing the program on my ipod.
I don't see any reason to spend the rest of my life in a rocking chair just to be safe. On the other hand, I'm also not going to take up BASE jumping. There's a happy medium somewhere in the middle. |

| jjcote: | Do you wind up symmetrically head-down? And can you bend your knees a little? |
| # Posted 2010-02-03 03:40:02 | |
| PG: | Yes and yes. Though if you're good you don't need to bend the knees. |

| bl: | With advancing years, flexibility is about as hard to find as presence of mind.... |
| # Posted 2010-02-03 06:56:21 | |
| barb: | JJ, perhaps you could bang a different part of your head with this approach. |

| walk: | What part do you have trouble with? |
| # Posted 2010-02-03 08:13:45 | |
| jjcote: | When it comes to banging, the skull is designed such that the top of the forehead is the preferred tool, since the bone is thickest there. I've had a surgeon* recommend smashing an opponent in the face with one's forehead rather than risk the delicate bones of the hand. (*I wasn't a patient, this was Mike Ames's father.) |

| bl: | At the psych hospital, head banging is fairly common & occasionally worrisome, helmets on rare occasions. I've felt the walls of the timeout room "shudder" from this activity but have not seen anyone hurt him/herself from it - certainly possible though. |

| jeffw: | Paula and I rose to the challenge and tried the wall thing. Of course, she could do it easily. I barely got my shoulders to touch which was a triumph! Take that yoga instructor! |
| # Posted 2010-02-04 06:19:39 | |
| jjcote: | I'm not sure whether I'm doing it right. I don't understand the bit about twisting the head sideways, I just go straight down, and I can easily get my head lower than my knees, at which point I have to stop because my chest is against my thighs and there's nowhere else to go, although I have some bend in my knees. When the rest of my forms arrive, I'll come in for proper instruction and the answer to how much the stimulus package saved me. |

| coach: | "Put your feet maybe a foot from a wall, facing the wall." and don't bend your knees.
Haven't tried it though...... |
| # Posted 2010-02-05 02:16:07 | |
| jeffw: | If you are *good* you don't bend your knees. If you suck (my case), then bend your knees all you want. |
| # Posted 2010-02-05 02:39:17 | |
| Charlie: | I'm not sure this is a particularly demanding test, because I can do it easily. Don't have to bend my knees at all. |

| Bash: | This instructor's casual comment has had far reaching - even international - consequences. I felt obligated to take the challenge after tonight's yoga class while I was feeling limber. Once I got the wall distance right, it made for a really nice hamstring stretch! |
