szurcher: I need a good sports quote. Something about winning/loosing, hard work, training, or along those lines. Anyone got some cool ones for me?? I'm being featured in a magazine for being a "Swiss/American" studying Elite Sports and exercise physiology here in Switzerland. They are going to take a picture of me and put this quote on there. The quote should be about what I do at the university... help?

jeffw: One of my favorites is "Champions are made when no one is watching."

There are a lot of good quotes here: http://www.internationalsport.com/nsd/nsd_quotes.c...

mikeminium: A couple classics:

Winners never quit and quitters never win.

Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing.

I believe the latter was Vince Lombardi, but I'm not 100% sure. I think there's at least one website where you can look up quotes by putting in a subject or theme, and also by typing a quote or partial quote can find the author. If anyone knows such a site, please post a link... I don't have time to go searching right now.

jingo6390: Dale Earnhardt:

"Second place is just the first place loser"

I dont particularly like that one, but it does stick in the mind.

szurcher: Thanks everyone!

I ended up using this quote from Jesse Owens: "In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more that that, too. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?"

I liked it because it incorporates a lot of things that we studied and talked about in my Master's program and it is not a quote that only glorifies the winner. This fits me, since I don't win a lot of O races here in Europe, but still try my very best. And Jesse Owens was a pretty great athlete, so it's nice to read a quote like that from someone who won a lot.

walk: Very nice choice. Surely the best mentioned.

j-man: Yes--that is a great one. What it lacks in pithiness it makes up for in profundity.
