The first significant update of the season is out for the Sprint Series and, well, things sure look pretty fishy....

-- Leading the women, excuse me, let's start over. Leading the "Chicks" is none other than, as if we can believe this because it's the very same person who is calculating the standings, it's that fastest-in-the-chute-at-WOC, the co-head honcho of the Sprint Series, the flash from Tuscon (when she's not in Raleigh, or Vancouver, or Seattle, or San Francisco, or wherever, it does help to be in the Air Force), yup, it's Cristina Luis. In first. All alone. By a lot.

And if you wonder why, just look to the mantra of all famous sprinters -- Sprint fast, Sprint often.

In second and third are two Canadians from Vancouver, Carol Ross and Louise Oram. But the season is still young with lots of high-point races to come.

-- For the Dudes, all the proof you need that, for early in the season at least, sprinting often trumps sprinting fast, by a lot. Top Dude right now is that San Francisco sprint-master Rex Winterbottom (more often associated with producing sprint masterpieces than competing in them). Whereas way down in 27th place is William Hawkins, perhaps the fastest sprinter in the Western Hemisphere, also the sprinter who likes sprints the least. Does the one lead to the other (in either direction)?

Can Rex stay at the top? It seems unlikely, given the speedsters lined up behind him. But who cares, he's in front right now.

Here are the standings.

Send info for the schedule to Kris Beecroft (krisbeecroft@msn.com); send results to Cristina (cristina.luis@gmail.com).
