How is it decided what races count and what don't?
After a few hours I worked out how the points are calculate... but what points score for your ranking is still confusing me...

it is essentially your top 4 scores plus the top half of any remaining scores in the last year. Training races and races with fewer than 4 claimed sets of splits aren't scored.

I'm also trying to figure out why some races are included in the rankings and others aren't...in this case, the race is included for some people but not others. It seems that generally the points value in the race splits display is shown in white when the splits have been claimed by an APer and gray if not, but I see some cases where the points for claimed splits are gray, the points do not show up in the "splits" listing on the user profile page, and the race is not factored into the rankings (either as one that counts or as one of the excluded low-scoring ones). Is there something I'm missing?

There have to be 4 APers who claimed their splits for the race to be ranked.

The people with a question mark next to their names did not claim their splits, which they have to do if their SI card number doesn't agree with the one in their profile. So, even though you may know that they have an AP log, their rank is in gray, or no rank for the course at all if four people didn't claim their splits.

Thanks - that part I know. :) I'm thinking of a race like this one: 15 APers have claimed splits, but there are three (ernst, katia, and me) for whom the points are still gray, the points do not show up in the listing of splits on the user's profile page, and the race does not seem to be included in their rankings. (I'm wrong about the race not being included in the rankings - I thought I'd double-checked that, but now I see now that I missed it. So it's just a display thing rather than a rankings-calculation thing.)

The short answer is that those point values you see on the splits page and users' profiles are frozen 2 months after the race date. The 3 people in question probably claimed their splits after that.

There is obviously some room for technical improvement here, when I originally set this up there was no e-punch importing and people generally entered their splits right away or not at all.

Ah, that explains it. (Late claiming of splits is definitely true in my case.) Thanks!

(And no worries - it was just a curiosity.)
