Discussion: championship formats

There is a proposal before the board to add a sprint championship to the USOF championship package. I think those who like sprints think that is a good idea; OTOH, those who would like to see the core US championship move more towards the IOF format of sprint/middle/long (or another format such as a 1 day long) -- as opposed to the 2 day classic would rather the core championship be modified -- instead of having the sprint added to the margin where long and middle now sit. The sprint championship is already in the package for '06 as a one-off.

I'm on the board, and my board seat to represent competitive interests. I've advocated more of a core modification towards the IOF style than simply adding the sprint to the present package, tho adding the sprint to the present package is better than nothing, of course. I've also advocated other changes that I think could improve the package. There is a long list of reasons why I advocate a core change rather than adding on, but they are not important here.

In any case, what it appears to come down to, is that if the core championship is to be modified, a task group will need to be formed to look at the championship package and make a recommendation to the board. The board doesn't appear that it will advocate this change on its own, nor accept a sweeping proposal without a group looking at it first.

I don't even know how many people want these sorts of changes. I do know some people do, and more people that I have read say they want them than don't want them, but that is hardly scientific.

So, if you want the championship package changed, I need a volunteer to head up a task group to make a recommendation. It may be that that recommendation is to do nothing, after all of the group's research is done. If you are happy with the status quo, you need do nothing. I would volunteer, but it is the same old story, work, family, training, and racing and other O work.

It is a tricky problem. Some classes want to retain the 2 day classic, but others in those classes want an IOF style championship also, for example. Clare and I have explored the problems and solutions quite a bit already, so the group would not be starting from total scratch.

So, if you are willing to volunteer to head up this group, please e-mail myself or Clare.

Thanks,
Randy
