This web site is a hoot! (When I visited, Canada and the US were pretty high up...and some gaudy baggy nylon near the bottom.)

Maybe there is a 'slight' bias? Not only in terms of nationality, but also in gender?
Aug 28, 2006 11:35 PM #
rm:
There certainly seems to be a bias for modern tech fabrics, and against nylon pyjamas.
Aug 29, 2006 12:23 AM #
Barbie:
What's wrong with nylon pyjamas?
Aug 29, 2006 6:49 PM #

A lot of static cling with the sheets.

Fun, fun, fun... By the way - has anyone managed to "rate" all possible pairings? I gave up after while...

yeah, I gave up after awhile too.

I see, you go to bed in your O-suit. It makes perfect pyjamas I have to say. I hear that a certain famous orienteer from the West Coast regularly wears them to bed.

No, he lives on the east coast.

What? there's another o-suit-sleepmonster that I am not aware of?
Is he old? Is he young? C'mon, give us some hints here.

there are crazy (or just curious) people who wear hr-monitor during sex. had fun reading big artical in the "Bicycling" magazine couple years ago.

Yeah, fashion. And the total lack of sense regarding fashion. I mean, everyone knows that leather and lace just don't go if you're wearing a HRM, too.

Maybe I should submit my picture on WOC 2006 O fashion (to bring this discussion back to its origin) - the US isn't faring too badly!

j-man:
We're just lucky that Boris wasn't the model. Or God forbid, me, because then we wouldn't be faring so well.
Sep 1, 2006 1:07 PM #
feet:
Yeah, it's noticeable Spike seems to have chosen attractive F21s rather than hairy M21s for the most part.
Sep 1, 2006 1:26 PM #
feet:
It's also noticeable that o-suits with females in them do better, as j-man says. Simply regressing the current rank of the country on a indicator variable for whether the 'model' is female has an R-squared of 0.24, and the coefficient on 'female' is significant at the 0.002 level.

Causality is questionable, though. Is it that
a) people aren't looking at the o-suits, rather at the occupants?
or
b) countries where the available photos are male tend to have fewer female runners, and this is associated with less effort in O-suit design because men don't care?
or
c) countries where the available photos are male are from O-developing countries that have no money for anything, including new O suits?
Sep 1, 2006 1:31 PM #
j-man:
Thank heavens for our professional economists. This is truly cutting edge research.

As to the causality -- it seems like proposition c in particular is not really atomic and is laden with some pretty bold assumptions.

Hammer:
Consider publication of this work in Sci. J. Orienteering feet. Although I suspect it has what we refer in my lab as "a negative impact factor" ie., if you publish in it it actually hurts your career.
Sep 1, 2006 1:46 PM #
eddie:
There are probably enough photos around to compare men-men and women-women to try and tease out some of the systematics. Then I guess there is a whole other can of worms (do gentlemen really prefer blondes?). Maybe he could blank out the heads? Replace them all with Spike's and Barbie's faces.
Sep 1, 2006 1:49 PM #
TheInvisibleLog:
So how are you going to do the final analysis? I assume the matrix of all paired comparisons will be solved using a method for incomplete matrices. I think the last I read on this was in "Theory and Method of Scaling" Chapter 9 The Law of Comparative Judgement, Solutions for Condition C Applicable to an incomplete matrix? Probably much more has been written on it since I read this tome many many years ago. Or will you get a comple matrix because enough of us have so little ot do we can go through the complete exhaustive comparison task?
Sep 1, 2006 2:03 PM #
feet:
More cutting edge research: I tried sticking all kinds of things into the regression. GDP per capita seemed also to have a positive effect on beauty that was significant when it went in the regression by itself. But this effect vanishes when you control for regional dummies (Nordic, rest of EU15, eastern Europe, rest of world), English-speaking, and places in the M and F relay at WOC06. All of these have the expected effect (in particular, being from eastern Europe is bad for your o-suit beauty, and being fast is good for it), but aren't quite significant. The only thing that remains significant is the gender of the occupant (t-stat around 2.15). R-squared is up to 0.58 by the time all this stuff is thrown in. So I'm coming back to my original theory, (a).
Sep 1, 2006 2:06 PM #
feet:
Of course, the (OLS) regression analysis method here is completely inappropriate, but I am a theorist and am too lazy to write down the appropriate omitted-variable model that would be more satisfactory here.
Sep 1, 2006 2:07 PM #
feet:
Did I really spend an hour doing that? Aagh.
Sep 1, 2006 2:08 PM #
eddie:
Given the coefficient, maybe the word "people" in (a) should also be changed to "men?"
Sep 1, 2006 2:11 PM #
j-man:
that is the adjusted r-squared?
Sep 1, 2006 2:13 PM #
feet:
no, I'm trying to make it sound good. :) adj r-sq is 0.44 for the largest model, which is still pretty high.
Sep 1, 2006 2:14 PM #
j-man:
Well, we know that it already looks good.

Can you do a principal components analysis, too?
Sep 1, 2006 2:14 PM #
feet:
no, but I can send you the data and you can. we can co-author.
Sep 1, 2006 2:22 PM #
j-man:
OK, that is just what I need. You bona fide academics can do that sexy stuff. Remember I work for the "man." We're buttoned down around here. But, if you think this research could get cited in AER or JFE, or the Laramie Range Press, or even People, I'm in.
Sep 1, 2006 5:06 PM #
Spike:
Yeah, it's noticeable Spike seems to have chosen attractive F21s rather than hairy M21s for the most part.

Here is how I picked the photos. I started with comparing Canada and Sweden and picked Louise and Jenny J because I thought the photos showed off the suits pretty well.

When I put together the complete list I used the worlfofo.com runner profiles as a photo source. I didn't look elsewhere. I went through the nations alphabetically and picked the first female with a photo that looked like it showed off the suit well. But, there were a couple of exceptions. I picked Simone Niggli, Minna Kauppi and Hanny Alston because they are Simone, Minna and Hanny. I knew that it'd be easy to find a good photo because there would be lots of photos of them.

The men show up when there wasn't a photo of a woman from the nation or the photo that I could find of the woman was so bad that you couldn't see the O' suit.

I never saw photos for North Korea or Serbia and Montenegro in the worldofo.com runner profiles.

I put the whole page together in about an hour, spending very little time or care in picking the photos.

In retrospect, I think the nation that probably deserves to do a lot better in the ratings is Israel. The suit looks good, but the photo doesn't do a good job of showing it.

Over the days, the results have shifted up and down a bit depending on which other pages have linked to the WOC2006 Fashion page. When the link showed up on an O' discussion page from the Netherlands, the suit immediately shot up in the rankings (and it has continued to fair well). The Swiss suit shot up in the rankings following a link from a Swiss discussion page.
