jfredrickson: It's great that you are designing courses already. It really helps to be able to understand what a course setter is thinking when they are setting the courses that you are running. Of course mapping is even better because then you can really get to understand the map, but that is a bit more advanced :)

When is the event that you are setting courses for?

Acampbell: i'm helping my dad set courses for DVOA's long-o champs at French Creek East on Oct. 22nd. And we still have a very long way to go!!! i'm doing the whtie and yellow. The white was fine when we walked it yesturday we just had to add a control at the beginning. the yellow on the other hand needs a lot of work!!!! my dad thinks it is to long, a bit to easy and we just found out yesturday that it brings them through a not so nice trail. so how people manage to course set so easily is beond me.

j-man: This is great Allison. I don't know anyone who can set courses easily. It does take a lot of work, both at home and in the field. But John is right -- it is great experience. And it will get easier in some respects, I suppose, but will always take a bit of time.

Sandy: Practice - lots of practice! So what course are you going to set next? :)

Acampbell: I think right now it is going to take a lot of time in the park. what looked good on the map at home was actually one of the worst part of the woods when we walked it yesturday. and the trails are really getting over grown. someone sometime said that dvoa had trail days, to clean up some of the trails on our maps. i think FCE should be on that list!!! and i really do think this was a great experience! i now at lest know what a plat form is and can find them just a little faster then my dad (but like a said in my log i think that was because i had the newer map) and i would be up to doing more white and yellow course setting.

jfredrickson: Of course the map training is good, but the main thing is that you are learning to think like a course setter, and that will help you tremendously in your Orienteering. It's kind of like those cops on TV who try to think like the criminal in order to catch him, just a little bit cooler :)
