| jfredrickson: | It is too hard to digest right before (or during a run). I normally avoid it as a sports drink (except for maybe after a race) because it is so heavy. It is really targeted more as a soft-drink than a real sports drink even if it has a lot of electrolytes. If you water it down it isn't as bad, but I would still recommend drinking something else before and during a race.
I have found that the powdered Gatorade is pretty good though. Perhaps it's just because I don't mix it as strong as the bottled stuff. Anyway, the only reason I was drinking it was because it was the only thing available. I didn't have time to get stuff together before the race, and our coach had brought tons of Gatorade so that was what I was drinking all morning prior to the race. Definitely bad race preparation and totally avoidable. I don't take these XC races as seriously as Orienteering races, and as such I find that I am often not properly prepared for them. I guess that is the main reason for my crappy performance. I'll definitely make more of an effort for the rest of the season since it is simply more fun if you are able to do your best. |

| jfredrickson: | Oh, and the apples I don't really know about. I am just taking my coach's word on that one since he seemed pretty adament about avoiding apples. Maybe I should do some research online... |
