Should they not have closed the hole (rather than allowing you to stick your thumb in to check the size!) - or did the health insurance not cover that either?
I did something similar at POM about 5 years ago, but that involved a metal railing during the sprint race. I had a similar non-language situation - I ended up signing some random piece of paper (looked a bit like an invoice but I never got charged) before they cleared everything up and got the sewing kit out.
Hope it repairs itself well, think mine took 2-3 weeks before I was able to start gentle running again.

I think it is too big to stitch - the sides wouldn't meet, and from what I understood they were filling it each time with antibacterial cream to draw the infection out and let it heal from the inside out whereas if it was stitched and there was an infection it could get nasty
