Discussion: The most convenient event. Ever. (once we get the time zone conversion right!)

Pink Socks:
The registration deadline for the 3rd annual MoboGoGlobo! event is a little over a week away, so it's time for you guys to start signing up.

We've created the most convenient event for all of you Attackpointers out there...

You don't have to worry about the size of your shoes, how much your car is contributing to the downfall of society, or what kind of SI stick to have. You don't have to sweat, worry about falling down, tripping over logs, or getting eaten by attack badgers. You don't even have to deal with the infamous Seattle rain.

All you need is a method of making a phone call on March 5th. That's it! Well, and a little bit of generosity to our local junior program here in Washington.

Heck, you don't even need to worry about knowing anyone in Seattle. If you don't, we'll pair you with a local guy.

Of course, if you do want to inconvenience yourself, go ahead, feel free to make your phone call while wearing uncomfortable shoes, while running on the treadmill, while your car is idling in the driveway, or while standing in a cold shower. (I don't know how to best simulate a badger attack, though...)

The event is convenient for you, and beneficial for us. It's fun, it's crazy, and it's the only event of its kind in the world.

This local guy has very much enjoyed teaming up with navigators who are thousands of miles away, and I look forward to doing the same this year.

This will be my 3rd year navigating from across the country. It's great fun.

We have 3 more local Seattle runners on the give-me-a-buddy list, waiting for you guys to sign up as a global navigator. Our current imbalance is +5 locals.

Our available local runners include current and former US team members, as well as our top high school varsity girl!

I'm keen to do this as a 'global', but can't guarantee being back at an internet connection until 5pm GMT. There seems to be a bit of confusion around start times, Seattle is 8 hours behind the UK which would put the start window between 1800 and 2000 assuming a 1000-1200 local time, some bits of the site say 17-19GMT and some say 15-17GMT! Can anyone confirm? :(

Pink Socks:
I think the start time should be 1800-2000 in the UK.

The 1700-1900 showed up because in previous years, the event was held later in March, and was after Daylight Savings (March 13th this year).

And the 1500-1700 shows up because I'm an idiot. :(

I'll get myself entered then!

Sorry, I'd love to run the race, but looks like we've got to meet someone at the airport right about the time of the event. Otherwise I'd be happy to help volunteer as well.

Thanks Andrew! I've got you signed up, our first international of the year!

I also fixed all of the GMT time references. Geez... I can understand the ones that were just an hour off... but I have no idea why I screwed up some of them by three hours! We had some callers from England, Germany, and Hungary in past years, and it's all worked fine before.

Devon, the beauty of mobile-o is that you can pretty much do it at a regular event, too. Find a friend, and have him talk you through a beginner or intermediate course.

About 26 hours to go, and we're looking for 1 more global! (or 2 globals and 1 local, etc).

Teams will be announced Thursday morning!

I have 24-hour clock issues all the time with swapping 1500 for 1700, 1700 for 1900...I think I transpose the second digit with the corresponding digit I want from the 12-hour clock.

Or perhaps we just have more than our fair share of time converting idiots in COC?

Pink Socks:
The one hour mistake was not taking into account that the event is ahead of daylight savings this year, so it's 8 hours this year, and not 7. The other two hours probably came from the same issue you mentioned.

When I studied in Australia, the time change really got confusing when I called home. When I started, it was X hours. It was autumn in the US, so they "fell back" an hour, so then it was X-1 hours. But Australia didn't "spring forward" until a week or so later, after which it became X-2 hours. Or something like that.

That might explain why we've never had any MoboGoGoblins from the southern hemisphere.

The 2-4am event time in WA might have something to do with it....I was eyeing it off, but the concept of trying to navigate coherently via phone at that time of the day scares me. :)
MoboGoGoblins
Shouldn't that be MoboGoGlobules?

9 hours to go, and we're sitting even-steven with 8 globals and 8 locals in the give-me-a-buddy category! Niiice.

For any additional globals, I can't guarantee you a match with a local.

Pink Socks:
A flurry of last-minute registrations brings the total to 27 teams competing in the 2011 MoboGoGlobo! event, not to mention however many day-of-event teams arrive to run the more traditional, two-person, mobile-o relay.

Unfortunately, one of those last minute registrants changed his status from give-me-a-buddy to call-a-buddy, so now I've got one extra global without a local (I'd already paired everyone up!).

Anyway, I'll see if I can rally the troops and find one more local to make the numbers equal!

I sent out team info and start times to all of the teams, and I'll publish a start list to the web within the next day or so.
