mata: I love that form of training! And it is an excellent exercise for orienteering at high speed, that you were writing about last week.

Stadsskogen can make you stupid, that is my experience, with all the small trails. Some are on the map an some are not.

jfredrickson: That is definitely my favorite kind of training. The problem is you need a good group of people to do it with so it's been a while since I've done it. It's fun to read about it again though.

szurcher: Should I organize a Tennis O training at the Cali Training camp??

#  Posted 2006-10-27 21:32:11
Ratlaf: Yes!! I was hoping to try to get some O specific excercises started at my Training Sessions here in Colorado, like Tennis O, but have not had the turn-out or advanced level runner interest to do so. Tennis O, or any other of a long list of training excercises at the Cali Training Camp would be great, I have a list if you want me to send it to you!!!

szurcher: Do you want to plan one training. It is a lot for me to do by myself.

Ratlaf: Sure!!! I'll send you an e-mail later today or tomorrow, I'm also going to look into flights today!

Spike: Tennis O' was a staple of the Texas Junior O' Camp.

Beaver O' might be a good session for the California camp. It makes for a good intense technique session when you're legs are tired.

Ratlaf: What is Beaver O? Would you describe it here, or send me an e-mail....Thanks

Spike: Beaver O' -- Group of 3-5 runners go together. The leader has a map with a detailed line O' course. The others have blank maps. Someone has a watch with a timer on it set to beep at a regular interval (every 4 minutes works fine). When the alarm goes off, everyone has to point out exactly where they are. If the leader is off, they get 2 beavers. If anyone else is off, they get 1 beaver. After everyone has quickly pointed out where they are and scored, a new leader takes over. Repeat.

Keep the stops short. The idea is to practice concentration, fine map reading, and full map contact, not relocation.

Typically, the group goes slowly and everyone concentrates well for the first 4 minutes. Nobody scores a beaver. But, in the second 4 minutes, someone starts thinking, "hey this is easy," and then suddenly the alarm beeps and they aren't sure where they are -- one beaver.

I like to use beaver O' at a training camp when you need a relatively low intensity session. It can also be fun at night.

Boris - Have you ever done this sort of O'? Lunsen would be fantastic terrain for it.
