Southern route choice looks much better in hindsight...
Length of northern route just skirting the lake is 838m and the southern trail route is not much longer, at 855m, in insignificant difference.

Slogging through the marsh was very slow with water up the the thighs and end of the route obligates more climb than swooping into the circle from the SW.

I disagree with Andrei.... My feet were frozen until I hit this lake. The water thawed them out!

I was pretty dry skirting the N end of lake .. i found grassy tufts to stay no more then ankle deep all the way except for the one jump across the stream itself

Granted Ian, your choice was mostly dry, but too long at 984 meters.
