It's possible that doing 1 hour of Z1 with some fast pedaling on Wednesday might have made the legs feel better for this ride. Sometimes total rest is a good thing, and sometimes it's better to go out for an easy ride to keep the legs loose. A nice walk can also help. With proper rest, you should be able to do Z3 work every other day.
