cedarcreek: I think that was Hurricane Fran, 1993. You've got to wonder, though, because many of them are still solid. You'd think with the hot southern summers, they'd be more rotten.

Tundra/Desert: It was indeed Fran, but September, 1996. The last A meet at Umstead was in March, 1996.

cedarcreek: Whoops. I trusted the internet for facts.

This page says "On September 4, 1993, Hurricane Fran crawled over Umstead Park and felled over 13,000 trees. This map shows 11,695 individual trees and their direction of fall was well as 416 areas too dense to map individual trees."

While Wikipedia says Fran was in 1996.

What's your opinion of the mapping of all those downed trees? I was skeptical until I ran on the map, and I was surprised at how well they're mapped, and how interesting it is sometimes.

Tundra/Desert: I sent you an e-mail. The discussion probably should not be public in the interests of event fairness (I don't want to have a vote). The question of the usability of the mapped trees is an interesting one, a quite contentious one, and needs to be resolved soon.
