Bruce:
Melbourne Uni have denied access for the Victorian Sprint Championships, so we're changing locations at the last minute. At this stage the race is still going ahead, and details of the location will be announced as soon as the alternative permissions are obtained in the next couple of days.

So is it going to be Latrobe, good thing Big Ev is injured, otherwise he would have has a unfair advantage :)

My opinion of the uni has plummetted (not that it was overly high to begin with ;-))

What's their reason for denying access?

ev:
dont let it be latrobe uni, save that for next year when im fit enough to beat jimbo =)
that sucks that those toffs from melbourne uni pulled the plug at the last minute

Bruce:
Most likely it will be La Trobe Uni, providing that we get permission. Dion is chasing that up now.
Entries close today, so if you haven't entered, email brucearthur1@bigpond.com if you want to run.

Final details will be emailed to entrants by the weekend.

I understand that Melbourne Uni's denial was based upon;
1) the need for a 100 page risk plan
2) the need for a clear benefit for the university
3) disappointment that students had run an event previously without obtaining proper permission
I wouldn't give up on it completely, but any future access requests would probably need to be driven by someone inside the university.

Just back from a conference inside the new Parliament House. Couldn't help noticing that it was easy to get lost. Great place for an event. Pity about the security.

Re the 100 page risk plan, typical University bullshit. I wouldn't hold out hope of a student having any sway in getting permission. The tradition of admin has always been to regard students as lice. I have some good stories of catching student admin out lying through their teeth to me. They didn't realise I had access to the student records system myself! That was a lot of fun....

did anyone get my entry? i sent it to the email i was told.

liggo:
yep kendal, got your entry

Melbourne Uni didn't exactly say "100 page" risk management plan - that was just exaggeration on my behalf

Pensioner - I was at the same conference as you and sat in the row behind you yesterday morning. You looked at me and I waved and said Hi but obviously you didn't recognise me in a suit...

thanks!

Truth is that Sports Union Official had stated some months ago that they would not support the event unless it was run by MUOC.
And for the record - we are required to submit a Risk Assessment for our Street-O event by some Councils. It's a standard form as a part of the application to use their facilities - no big deal. Just deals with contingency planning and describes the supporting organisation.

How about reforming EMUs club then?
Dec 6, 2006 10:57 AM #
fell:
EMUS still exists, although due to the fact that it was founded on the basis of distancing themselves from the sports union, and the fact that is has consumed about 7 other clubs in the last 2 decades means it no longer has much to do with the university.

why do you want to reform it?
are we talking about re-forming it or reforming it?

TheInvisibleLog:
Rebadging...
Or maybe an MUOC club needs to be formed but be in reality a chapter of MFR. Shouldn't be too hard to do that and explain away the 'old farts' like Bruce and Liggo as the new EMUs.

Surely this outcome is not surprising. Several months ago someone from Property and Grounds (or whatever they're called) said unofficially that there'd be little hope of ever getting permission through Property and Grounds. He suggested it would be far easier to hold it through Melb Uni Sport.
As Melb Uni Sport (as far as a year ago) belligerently insisted on having a part in any event, there was never going to be much chance of the event being held at Melb Uni.

La Trobe University is now confirmed as the location. Approval was received today. Thanks to Dion, it only took a few phone calls to secure access. They seem to be a much friendlier group to deal with than Melbourne Uni.

Car Park 6, La Trobe University. Melways 19 H6

Fees:
Please register and pay on the evening and collect your control card (not SI) and control descriptions between 6:30pm and 7pm.

Junior $6
Family $25

Starts will be from approx 7pm at 1 minute intervals. A start list will be available soon.

Macedon Street-O is looking like a very attractive alternative to Latrobe Uni Sprint-O for next Wednesday night. Specially produced colour map for the format with a mixture of bush, park and streets using a large reserve on edge of town. Would make a good option for a future sprint-o event. Mid-way between Melbourne, Bendigo and Ballarat. And only $4 entry fee!
Pity we've got this clash of three similar foot-o events on the same night.

TheInvisibleLog:
Macedon is the ideal location for a Maze-O using the pine plantation grid as a framework. Add that and I might be tempted to make a trip south.

Uncle JiM:
Very much a pity, I was talking to Lou DeHaas (Course Setter for the Macedon event) tonight, he and John Ewels (organiser) have set courses from Tony Clarke reserve, using a new map of the area on the edge of town and forest. Would be good at 1:5000
