PG: So when you have it so that it marks a point every time you make a foot strike, which you think would be accurate, how much will it really be over-measuring. Just think about your footprints in the snow when runnig in the open. They sure aren't in a straight line. That would be even more true on a trail. And how much extra are you adding because you are wearing it on your wrist and waving your arm all around?

I think you're still just looking for a way to claim more distance for any given run. What's the word that pops into mind? Oh, yeah, bogus.... :-)

cmorse: so what you're saying is that when Phil's waving his arms wildly in the forest, he's just padding his run, eh? Pretty sneaky Phil, but Peter's on to you now.... :-)

PBricker: I already thought about the armswinging problem. I figured the watch moves about 10-15% farther than the trunk of your body. But I convinced myself that, even with exaggerated armswings, you are below the Forerunners j.n.d. (just noticeable difference). And anyway, armswings, being in the direction of motion, can't add to the total distance measurement because your forward speed is (almost always) greater than your backwards arm speed, so data points don't reverse direction. And you'd have to be pretty drunk for your path through an open area to lead to over-measurement (if it really should count as "over-measurement").

As for PG's earlier "challenge" to the Forerunner, claiming to be more accurate (by some sort of divine or mystical insight?), it raises the problem of finding a neutral judge: who will judge the judges? But if we could set up a fair competition, I know where I'd put my money.

jjcote: The ultimate yardstick is to go out there with a yardstick (or a steel tape). But I'm hoping it doesn't have to come to that.
