Natural navigation: Get around without GPS

A few years ago during the Queensland (Australia) Orienteering Championships I fell and broke my brand new southern hemisphere thumb compass. Deternmined not to break my 40 year string of never abandoning a race I floundered around and tried to borrow a compass from passing strangers. Help was not forthcoming until a passing orienteer told me the "sun is in the northwest" From then on the navigation was a breeze. Natural navigation works.
