The time is now. The fun starts Saturday!

OCIN's New Year's Orienteering Festival is shaping up to be an exciting weekend. With 5 races in 3 days, there is something for everyone. And, you can't beat the prices!

The action starts on Saturday, December 30, at Miami University Natural Areas, with white (beginner), yellow, orange, brown and green courses set by Bill Swift. Starts are 11-1.

On Sunday, December 31, we have TWO "A" sanctioned sprints at Miami University's Western Campus & Peffer Woods, one on an area never before used for an OCIN event. Sprint #1 is listed as having starts from 10-Noon, but we are
planning to keep the course open at least an hour later. Sprint #2 has starts from 1 pm to 3 pm.

Sunday Night, we celebrate "Midnight in Rio". By special dispensation, all clocks in Governor Bebb Metropark will jump ahead 3 hours to Rio de Janeiro time. The cabin will be decorated for Carnival, and we've even managed to import some Brazilian Guarana Cola! Sorry, no Brahma beer, champagne, or any other alcohol is permitted. Anyway, at precisely midnight, Rio time (9 pm eastern), orienteers will be off on a mass-start night score course, with a 90 minute time limit. Spend the night at the cabin if you like (bring a warm sleeping bag!).

On Monday, January 1, rise early and head north to Hueston Woods State Park. The annual Billy Pig and Piglet long-distance races are off with a mass start at 10 am. Jon Rauschenbach has set a 12.5 km Pig and a 7.5 km Piglet for your pleasure. There will be a white course as well.

You don't want to miss this weekend. We will take day-of-event registration for all events, but it will REALLY help if you email name, year of birth, SI# (if you have one), and which events/courses you are planning to do to mikeminium((at))aol((dot))com You can use the entry form at www.ocin.org as a guide. Please print a copy, fill it out, & bring it with you to speed registration.

Sprint 2 was really fun. The section 6-7-8-9 was just crazy, and I'm a slow runner. I really like urban sprints, but I enjoyed these complicated vegetation boundaries more. Mike did a great job setting it.

These two sprints were my first time competing on 1:4000 maps, and I really like the bigger scale---It's a lot easier to read than 1:5000, in a way that improves fairness.
