blairtrewin: No, just someone being quoted out of context. There's a grain of truth in that the acute phase of short-term El Nino drought normally ends between January and March. The question is then what happens next - a period of near-normal rainfall which at least stops the situation from getting any worse temporarily but doesn't make much impression on the big storages (like 2003), or a sustained period of above-normal rainfall (like 1995 or 1983).

The person who you may have seen on the news saying it was going to break between February 23 and March 5 is someone of no known scientific credibility who makes his living by issuing a forecast of above-average snowfall every year so the resorts can use it in their marketing. When challenged on the spectacular failure of said forecast this year he claimed it was accurate because it snowed heavily in New Zealand!
