Does anyone out there have a cool ski-o poster / flyer I could plagiarize for an upcoming RMOC meet...? (Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, whatever.)

I don't know about cool, but I have something made up we were giving out at a ski race. I'll send it to you - may be the wrong audience, but at least it's a start.

Kootenay Orienteering Club had a great one last winter but I can't find it on their web site at the moment.

KOC is that where Jim Webster is involved?
He´s on AP and his mailing address should be available for questions...

Thanks, Alex! I got the PDF you sent me. Actually, that is the audience I have in mind for my flyer: non-orienteers passing through the Frisco Nordic Center.

I found BAOC's 2012 Ski-O Tour bulletin: link. It's a multi-page bulletin, not a flyer, but it has a great look.

Hammer, I bet this is the Kootenay poster you mentioned, but all I could find was this tiny thumbnail. You're right, though -- it's very sharp.

Kootenay thumbnail.

Aren't there posters available on the OUSA website -- and some depict ski-O?
Dec 8, 2011 10:37 PM #
bbrooke:
Yeah, GuyO, good point -- there's this one. I don't love it, but it would work if I could get the source file.

Yes, I've been designing the bulletin. I'll send you the pdf of our flyer we were distributing at WOC and at various A meets.

Guy, as far as I know, OUSA doesn't have something shovel-ready, but I'd love to be proven wrong!

Contact Glen Schorr for promo materials if you don't see what you need. He deals with a graphics co. that supplied the items on the Promo Materials page.

Let him know of other formats you desire.

Janet, where do I find the promo materials page?

Here.

Cool!

I don't see anything you could hand out at a ski race, for example - is there anything that explains what ski-o is, for people not in the know? The poster is nice, but it would be great if it could use vectorized text, especially for a 5x3' banner. Just out of curiosity - was that control photoshopped into the picture?

The promo that Larry Berman and I worked on for a big eastern regional ski race last winter is here. We felt it did a decent job explaining ski-o for the uninitiated.

Contact Glen at gjs AT orienteeringusa DOT org and let him know what you want/need. I don't have access to any source files, just what's posted on the Promo Materials page (thanks, PG).

only two CSU skiers at the World Champs?
Dec 9, 2011 2:54 AM #
acjospe:
Sorry, that's not very clear - the handout was given out at an Eastern Cup race being hosted by CSU, so we were talking about people in the CSU skiing section, not the orienteering section.

I like that CSU poster. We should get it to every ski race in the USA!

OUSA's prpomo materials page is linked from "Club Leaders" which is linked from "Home". Wouldn't it be easier to find under "Event Organizers"?
Dec 9, 2011 2:02 PM #
JanetT:
I can add a menu link under event organizers, but don't want to change the URL at this point.

Trying to be a little delicate here... these are my own opinions and may be completely incorrect and impolitic.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

We have some good photographers in this sport and there are numerous good amateur, pro, and semi-pro people who shoot sports.

If we are going to invest in professional publicity materials, shouldn't we invest in professional pictures and a coherent layout?

I like ski-O, but with those sickly nylon bags defiling the trees, it looks a lot less appealing. [I am referring to the OUSA ski-O brochure.]

Well, I certainly don't have the graphic design talents of Alex or Patrick, but here's what I came up with (I started with one of Microsoft Publisher's flyer templates):
Just FYI in case this is useful to anyone...

Just found this thread. I'd be happy to send along a copy of the above KOC poster to anyone for future use. I have a full pdf but could get the original file so it could be modified. kootenayorienteering@me.com I have one for a snowshoe race, as well. Or, if someone wants to post it here (beyond my skills), I'll send it to them to do so.

bbrooke: I like your poster. I don't have MS publisher on my Mac. Would it be possible to convert it to a MS word file, so I could use it as a template.

bbrooke:
Ernst, exporting from Publisher to Word yields unformatted text only, no graphics. (But, I just emailed you a file in the Publisher 2000 format we talked about offline).

Also, for the "creatively challenged" (like me), here are some nice-looking layouts to try to emulate. I found these by doing a Google image search for "ski race poster". I'm not sure what I'd put in place of all those sponsor logos. ;-)

Comic Sans! (poster #1)

I'd never heard of ocean ski racing before. Never knew that a ski could be a boat!

This is pretty much how I "designed" the QOC website too, which is an attempt at a hybrid between the websites of Michigan State and Wisconsin. Design via Google search works surprisingly well.

All those sponsor logos on those other posters makes me really want to give up orienteering and go to where the real action is happening.

"action" = "money"?
