How come no sugar? I pretty much eat just straight fresh or frozen organic fruits for my sugar fix and it not only did the trick, but has given me much more energy.

I don't mean NO sugar, but no refined sugar. I eat a ton of fruit, sometimes 6 or more servings a day. I've found that I feel my best when I eat mainly fruits and veg. I do love my sweets though, and I can get carried away if I don't check myself. I was doing Matt Fitzgeralds Racing weight for a month and I felt great on that, but after Thanksgiving I went crazy eating sweets, baked goods and whatnot. The only problem is that when I cut out sugar completely, and then I use gels during a long run I wind up really hurting from the chaos it creates with my digestion. What do you use for long runs. I'm concerned about what to use for the Phoenix marathon in January.

Fuck gels. When will companies that make them ever get it right. The only gels I can consume are Power gels.... because of one simple thing.... when you squish them they feel like liquid...versus HAMMER and GU who's gels feel like thick molasses. I use about 4 gels in a marathon depending on how well stocked the marathon is. Twin Cities is such a great venue that you really only need about 2-3 because they had out gels at roughly mile 15 which is cool. I think Fargo will do the same. I hate carrying shit. I usually rubber-band about 2-3 gels on my wrist and that is all I need. I do not eat anything when I train. I like to try and make my body as efficient as possible. I fuel up after long runs with fruit, veggies and tofu. Mainly because I hate eating when running and carrying stuff. Plus the guys I train with are super caliber and they do the same. You go to some of the marathons and ultras and see people strapping on bottles and fuel like Sly Stalone in a Rambo movie.... it's ridiculous. However.. with Ultras I've been either a hit or miss. Either a great race or a pure failure. This has all been due to fueling. The failure races have been due to over compensation in fueling when I should have just fueled like normal, which is mild if far less than compared to others. I can't compress tons of calories like others. My best ultra races have come when I am at homeostasis in fueling. My next true ultra since a 3 year break will be MadCity 100km in April of 2013 more than likely. Probably will do a 50km next year like Wild Duluth. I had fun at the one the inaugural year. I would say just do whatever is comfortable for you. Don't over fuel if you are not hungry or over hydrate if you are not thirsty. I like to hover right around feeling hungry when I come into an aid station. Any race plans set yet for 2012?
