i have not been following the IC discussions, but if the map is basically the LIDAR, I'm shocked. What more can one say?
On a closer look, there is evidence of mapping, as some of the small depressions are 'U's and some of the tiny hills are marked as knolls... though that's the only only evidence of mapping that I can see...
If it is mapped, it is one very ugly map. The jiggly lines and so on do nothing to improve the runner's experience at walking pace, let alone racing pace. There well and truly is an art to mapping. You do need to spend quite a bit of effort translating "reality" into something the brain can efficiently and effectively interpret and translate into a perception of the terrain. I think that is seriously lacking in the sample you posted.
