I'm organizing a Training Camp at Pawtuckaway State Park in New Hampshire on March 17-18. Housing will be found nearby on Saturday night.

There will be three exercises on Saturday with a total distance of 10-15 km and shorter options available, and two on Sunday. The camp will be simple - we will hang streamers before the exercises. The exercises will be advanced level, and all are welcome. Alexei Azarov is designing the exercises.

Please contact me if you're planning on coming or indicate your attendance on the AP event page so I can print sufficient maps. Fees for the camp will be set to cover map printing costs - no more than $10 per person.

Thanks!

I would be very tempted to go if it was the following weekend. Unfortunately I'm booked up with a race that weekend.

Neil and Ian, we are looking forward to seeing you the following weekend at the Junior Training weekend at Blue Mountain. See you then,

Is there any more info available like what time to show up?

The exercises this weekend are:

Sat AM: Line-O, 4-5 km in total
Sat PM 1: Control pick, 6.6 km or 3.6 km
Sat PM 2: Long legs, 8.2 km or 4.8 km
Sun AM: Middle distance course, 5.4 km
Sum PM: Long course, 7.6 km

There are 73 streamers to set Saturday morning before the exercises, so let's meet at 9:30 AM at the park's main entrance.

On Saturday the line-O will start at about 11 AM, we will eat lunch, and the afternoon's exercises can start at around 1:30. Alexei designed the two afternoon exercises such that the starts and finishes are close together though removed from the parking lots. Bring a water bottle or snack with you so you don't have to double back to the parking lot to rest before the third exercise.

On Sunday, we will meet at the boat ramp (at the end of Fundy Launch Road at 10 AM). I'm still tracking down housing, but I expect there will be nearby O-families who will let us crash on their floors. Bring sleeping bags. We will make some sort of communal dinner arrangement or in the worst case, go out to dinner.

Night-o?

iansmith:
No Night-O is planned, but I think 20 km of O on Saturday and 13 on Sunday (not including control setting/pickup) will be sufficient. I have the NEOC night-O controls if you want to set one, but I don't plan on participating.

Me neither, that sounds like plenty!

What time are people leaving Boston on Saturday morning? I'd rather not take our car so I can leave it with Rob - any chance I can jump in a car? It'd be easier if you could divert via Framingham, but I understand that's a bit of a jump. I'll just have to make Rob get up if that's too much of a reach.

Also, it seems it may be best for the first person on at least the full long legs course to just hang as they go? I guess the pick, although long, is still relatively spatially confined.

Are there any streamers to set for the line-O? If not, than I could possibly skip the line-O and set out some streamers during that. I think line-O is great training but I'm not sure that we'd be there at 9:30. Just a thought.

Not sure how people feel about this either but----if there are a few remote controls, how about using toilet paper and not picking them up?
Mar 13, 2012 4:18 PM #
iansmith:
Yeah, I was considering some form of biodegradable streamer to reduce our workload after the trainings. Even with 73 streamers, if we have seven or more people setting, groups of ten controls can be devised with loops typically 3-5 km long - much of which is on trails. At a glance, it looks like there will be three-ish longer setting expeditions, but I think that should be manageable.

The middle controls are the only ones on Big Island, so those could be put off until Sunday. Carl - especially since the sun doesn't set until after 6:30, if you can get to Pawtuckaway by 11 or 12, there should be enough time for you to get in all three exercises if you wanted. Your help setting would also be appreciated, of course.

We can easily be there by 11; 9:30 would be a push though.
Also, I'm not doing the training so much for myself as to bring Ethan so I don't mind skipping or cutting short some exercises to set/pick-up controls.

I'm almost tempted to try cheating with my GPS. Can't think of a decently controlled experiment though. And my n wouldn't be particularly persuasive...

I plan to participate Sunday, but could possibly collect some of Saturday's remote streamers later during the week. Makes for a good training.

Going Saturday only. Not sure if I get there by 9:30am, but should be there by10:30 for sure, maybe leave me some close in stuff?

Thanks Ian for some excellent training - great courses. Pawtuckaway with no bugs is always a treat.

Thanks to Ian for organising, Alexei for planning, and the legion of chaps who put tapes in the forest this weekend. It was a pleasure to have a training weekend where the only effort I needed to expend was on the exercises themselves, and I'm very grateful. Great fun too!

If anyone has scanned the line, could they e mail me it? I don't seem to have come home with it and my inner Quick Routedemon is getting antsy.
