The site for the upcoming US Team A meet Fundraiser is active with online registration, event center details, list of hotels, event format, schedule, etc etc. The Fundraiser is not a bare-bones event this year. There will be T-shirts, awards, and a pig feast.

Don't forget the nice technical shirts! If you came to the FLO event last year, the club and their local adventure gear provider did a remarkable job with those green shirts with a giant manatee on the back. Well, BOK and Axis Gear are working hard to bring you something even better this year. These shirts are equally perfect for the woods, trail running, or for hanging out at the finish. Fabric is close to 100% polyester fiber. Dries quickly. Way fashionabler than the pajamas! There will be an opportunity to order shirts at the event if you see them and you like them, but at a substantial extra cost and for a later delivery.

Fares from most places in the States to Raleigh for the weekend of the event are in the low $200s. You can avoid some of the carbon dioxide emissions by not renting a car, taking a shuttle to the event center, eating nearby (the Indian restaurant within walking distance in particular is quite nice) and carpooling to the event with fellow orienteers. Running to Day 1 and Day 3 starts from the event center and some airport hotels is also possible (~40–50 minutes each way).

We will offer a model area on Friday and Saturday to acquaint you with the unique mapping style of fallen trees, rootstocks, and small quartz piles. Preliminary course details have been posted.

Swisstoph:
Anyone able to let me carpool with them...?
Feb 6, 2007 9:42 PM #
jtorranc:
Possibly - I just made a defensive rental car reservation - but the desirability of minimising carbon emissions dictate that I at least try to be in a full car for the whole trip to North Carolina and back, not just the driving while in North Carolina
Feb 6, 2007 10:51 PM #
jeffw:
Maybe if you just avoid the Indian restaurant, you would get enough carbon dioxide credits to afford a less full car.

Anyone interested in sharing a hotel room? I may not get there until late(ish) friday evening, depending on my work schedule.

Less yellow questions, more WRE points! It looks like we're clear on the Men's WRE, but will need two more ranked women to sign up (and finish the course) to award points. The same old song...

Joseph says there's absolutely no way the dinner will run out of food.

The IOF's world ranking link seems to be broken. Does anyone have a good link or happen to know which N. American women "count"?

I'll bake cookies for any of the women that need extra incentive to go. ;-)

From the top of my head, cookie recipients would be Samantha and Hillary, with Sandra probably needing more than a giant cake to come over.

The average of the points needs to be over 600 (indicated by the "R" in one of the columns on the left) in order for the runner to count for the race ranking. Curiously, zero point scores do not average in, and this is why Angelica is ranked.

I would not expect sub-6 min/km times at any day of this year's event mainly
because there are plenty of dead trees on the ground. I may be wrong.

It is not my intention to take the discussion away from the physical specifications of Vlad 10 years ago and now, but I'll do it anyway.

I am arriving Saturday morning at the Raleigh airport. What is the best way to get to the day 2 Start/Finish area from there. Are there shuttles/ public transportation going through / near the park ?
Is anyone else arriving Saturday morning?

I read the comment from the event web site that both the airport and the park share a boundary :) Is it a crossable one or uncrossable, and if it is the former what is the bearing to the start/finish area of day 2 from the main concourse of the airport :) I could jog across the airfield if I only knew the right direciton.

No, I don't know anything about the 1996 Anders Eriksson. Probably one of the most common names in Sweden. The only thing I know is that I will be there this year.
Feb 19, 2007 9:24 PM #
Tundra/Desert:
I thought it was all about Boris 11 years ago vs. now, no?

Yes you can run from the airport to Day 2 start, but it's a bit far for a warmup, I'd say about 13 km, and that's without major obstacles. Umstead is a huge park! (there is a 100-mile run held in it.) There is a little bit of officially inaccessible land (airport property) you'd have to go through. I have. There are no trolls, TSA, cameras, land mines, or barbed wire there. Just a lot of unmapped rootstocks.

Raleigh seems sorely devoid of public transit. There are hotels right next to Day 2 start with airport shuttles, but usually they don't like to transport people who aren't staying in these hotels. A taxi ride would be about $20. So, I think your best bet would be to take the hotel shuttle to the event center. If they ask you if you have a reservation, answer that you do. Then, arrange for someone to pick you up from the event center hotel. You can e-mail me with your arrival time, and we'll arrange a ride for you.
Feb 20, 2007 7:15 AM #
Nikolay:
That true. You are right.

Taking a ride to the event center sounds as a good idea.

I'm also looking for someone to share a ride with for the whole weekend, I'll help with gas etc. I'm arriving Friday at 2:30 and would like to try to make it to the Sprint Start... Not sure if that'll happen.

I'm also hoping to stay in the Dorms so if someone staying in the dorms has room for a straggler let me know.

Thanks.

Tundra/Desert:
The event center, the Days Inn, still has rooms, and the special rate they are offering will expire tomorrow. (Unfortunately I just learned about it!) So, those of you who made travel plans and have entered, should make your hotel reservation right away: (919) 469-8688.
Feb 20, 2007 4:59 PM #
jtorranc:
The question of whether the dorms will have the required minimum number of people interested in them has been my excuse recently for holding off on making decisions. But time is getting short. Christoph - why don't we say I'm your ride for the weekend (although I'm not promising to get you at the airport on Friday if it interferes with my start - maybe Vlad et al will be willing to let you run quite late and me close to 2pm and I could come get you after racing)? Up to two other hopeful dorm stayers can sign on as well. Nikolay by all means if he wanted to stay in the dorms, though I'll hope he's arriving quite early Saturday morning since the WRE rules will preclude any monkeying with the start draw to make it easy for me to come get him close to or after the first start. If the dorms fall through, the plan stays the same except we book a hotel room.

Is the event still short on ranked females? I may actually be able to go, which means I could deliver the cookies in person.
Feb 20, 2007 11:24 PM #
Tundra/Desert:
Cookie recipients will be revealed shortly. Still working, but it looks like we will not be short on ranked females, with a cushion.

Also, we are quite flexible with the start window for the Sprint. At least one person requested a 4:30 pm start. As long as you promise to get out of the park by 7 pm, you're good. It will turn into a night Sprint around 6:30 pm, and you'll have to make arrangements for downloading at the event center, but the SI controls will stay on. The park, however, will lock the gate at 7:00 pm sharp, and if your car is not out by that time, you may have to run the 13–20 km to your accommodations.

We apologize for the problems that occurred, in particular the delayed Sprint start, the misprinted control description on Red M on Day 2, and especially for the delay on starting the Blue runners on Day 3.

Here's what happened on Day 3 (long version of the story). I dropped an SI unit in the woods when putting out controls on the afternoon of Day 2. I placed the control and the water, and had an extra SI unit, but had nothing to make the code with. I was going to put a replacement unit after dinner on Saturday with a headlamp, but was dissuaded, being told it was virtually certain I'd get arrested or at least interrogated for being in the park after dark.

So, the unit was instead placed on Sunday morning. The person who placed it had another water control to place early on Sunday, a fairly close one to the start and the assembly area. The latter task got delayed, and when it was finally done around 8:30, he was unsure that he had found the right location because there was no streamer.

Eric and I raced to the location. While Eric stayed in the car, I ran and found the streamer (around 9:06), but no control. I searched about 50 meters around for the misplaced control, with no luck. I then put out a replacement control at 9:15, while Eric rushed to the start and asked to hold the Blue runners. The concern was that there was another control in the area with the same code and with water. Five people on Blue had already started.

I ran a bit more around the area, trying to locate the other control, again with no luck. At 9:26, the first Blue starter, Joe, arrived (the replacement control had been there for about 11 minutes). Unfortunately Joe made a mistake and circled the area some. I kept a close watch, thinking the worst—that maybe there had been mistakes in the original vetting all along, so that Joe would find the correct location and hopefully the other control. But, it seemed, Joe was just a bit off. After a while (at 9:32), Joe and two others who had caught up by then found the control and went on. Another runner arrived shortly and found it, too. My search radius had by then expanded to about 150 meters, still with no sight of the other control.

I then left the area. We found the person who placed the other control in the morning, and after he located the other control, we sent Eric to the start and gave the go-ahead. This was around 9:57. There was therefore an about 50 minute delay in starting all but the first five Blue competitors. Some people had early flights and had to downgrade to a shorter course. We sincerely apologize for that.
