| candyman: | I think January-February 2008 would be a great time to revive the High-O. What would we need to do to get it going? |

| blairtrewin: | First step will be to find out from Parks whether it's a goer in principle. Some Dandenong Ranges people are keen to do something at Mount Buller on the long weekend in 2008 - if this gets up then we'll go for 2009, but I don't think they'll get permission for Buller, especially as most of it burnt this summer. (The existing park management plan, which pre-dates the 2003 fire, provides for orienteering on the Bogong High Plains but not elsewhere). I'm also not sure whether 2008 will be a long weekend for everyone - it is in Victoria but some states don't give a substitute holiday on the Monday if Australia Day falls on the weekend. (In 2009 it falls on Monday).
Even if there's no event, it would be a great place to go for a few days training. I was trying to convince all of you of this but there were no takers this year - you missed a good one... |

| TheInvisibleLog: | My memories of the High O are that it was a line of punters following the poles. Anyone who left the standard routes (ie me) was punished by waist deep heather. Any change in this situation because of fire or changed grazing regimes?
PS I have the OCAD file that Matt drew. |

| candyman: | Yeah, I think the NZ trip probably took precedence for a lot of people. If we can put something on the calendar though I'm sure people will make the effort. |

| blairtrewin: | I'm not sure if my memories are deceiving me (it's six years since I've been up there) but there didn't seem to be anywhere near as much "heather" as I remember there being. (There was never much on the Pretty Valley map in any case). The snow gums are also actually runnable in places - in orienteering terms, the forest areas I saw were probably 40% white, 40% light green, 20% medium green or worse (whereas pre-fire it was probably 10/40/50). Anything off the edge of the plateau is still a nightmare, of course.
A route choice leg occurred to me - start in the Falls Creek village, first control on top of Spion Kopje. 17km around, mostly on reasonable tracks, or 4km straight through some of the roughest country you'll see anywhere in this part of the world. |

| Reubster: | I have also been wondering about what it would take to get it back. If it is too much hassle then just getting a big group up there for some serious training would be tip top! |
