Horseshoe Resort Snowshoe Raid
February 24th Barrie, Ontario

Bob Miller, captain and navigator of Canada's top adventure racing team Supplier Pipeline, is the course planner and has teamed up with the Golden Horseshoe Orienteering Club to host the first ever Horseshoe Resort Snowshoe Raid. Race solo or in teams of two. A 3 hour score orienteering/mini rogaine format will be used.

Horseshoe Resort was the site of the 1994 North American and Canadian Championships and all of the maps have been updated by the COC 2007 mapping crew in 2006. Despite a late winter there is now 60 cm of fresh powder snow at Horseshoe (and more is on the way). Great prizes and post race food will also be served up.

Registration is now open. Details are at:

Every once in a while a new race comes along that you know is going to have great staying power. This race is one of them. 3 hours of adventure running (score orienteering style) on snowshoes. Wow! This race was awesome.

Why?
Totally revised map of the 1994 NAOC terrain by Olles maps. 20cm of fresh powder on a 80cm base. -8C with bright sunshine. A good field of top orienteers and adventure racers from southern Ontario, free gaiters to all participants, awesome post race food and atmosphere, a course designed by Canada's top adventure racer Bob Miller (4th in 2006 Primal Quest), changing navigation strategies, lots of calf burning climbs and over $2.5K in prizing.

Mark Adams destroyed the field getting all 25 checkpoints in just over 2.5 hours - and in the process won a free weekend for two (accomodation and food) at Horseshoe Resort. Heck, I came third and still went home with a pair of awesome Salomon Gore Tex Trail shoes. Pretty sweet, eh!

Full results are here (photos and maps coming soon)

See you next year.

Next GHO adventure run is the Giant's Rib Raid on April 7th in Milton. Teams will be challenged by the Niagara Escarpment and part of the 2006 NAOC terrain. See you then.

We had an AMAZING time at the Snowshoe Raid on the weekend. The snow was amazing, I would have liked to be out there for another hour or two I was having so much fun. The gaitors for each participant was a nice surprise. I hope that this race occurs next year!

Agreed. The best part is that there is enough terrain in the surrounding area to stage completely different courses for the 4 or 5 years at least.

Great race Bob.

Yup! GHO has just completed a major mapping effort in the region. Many revised maps and several brand new ones as well. They will be used for Nav-Stock in mid June (15-17) that includes the eastern leg of the Canadian Selection Races for the World Champs. Details available later this spring.
