bubo: Yeah, that looks funny. Itīs obvious though that the distances arenīt the same - youīre four times faster on solid ground than in the water...

Kat: Yes, almost exactly four times faster. Pretty cool! I planned today's workout with this thought in mind. I wanted to see how hard it would be compared to yesterday's track session.

It was an interesting experiment and perhaps the best way to see the difference between running intervals and swimming intervals. In terms of time (both active and recovery), the intervals were almost exactly the same. And they were pretty similar in the amount of effort required as well. But the track intervals tired me out a lot more than the swimming ones did. While I was actually doing the pool intervals, I could not have gone much faster (just as on the track I could not have gone much faster). But I recovered significantly quicker. This is part of the reason why swimmers often have no more than 10 seconds rest at the wall, even on the longer intervals. Another difference was that in the pool I felt more muscle tiredness (arms) than aerobic tiredness, which is opposite from running. But perhaps if I keep lifting weights in the gym I'll be at a point where I can push myself more aerobically in the pool.
