Hi All I will be doing some training's this fall for juniors and anyone interested. Here is the info.

Junior Training Boggs Mountain A meet.

There will be a junior training session and review of courses at 3pm on Saturday after the long for about 90-120min with Erin Schirm US junior Coach. Be prepared to go into the woods for a little bit have your course map and compass with you from the long course. Any juniors who ran orange and up are welcome. If you are a yellow or white runner and would like to attend please contact me.

If you are interested in making a JWOC Team in the next couple years please set up a time to talk with Erin Schirm during the A meet for about half an hour.

Email is best for me.

10/13-10/14 Training in Harriman area.

There will be a training camp in Herriman the weekend before NAOC. We will be using some of the exercises from the US team training week, so please sign up for that and get the maps. We will also be doing some other stuff. My plan is to start around 10am on Saturday Morning, with 1-2 exercises, and one or two in the afternoon. Sunday will be the same. If you are heading home after the weekend Sunday activities will end at 2.

I will be around the whole week and for anyone interested I would happy to put some people up in my parents’ house for a couple days to train and then drive down to the model event on Thursday an NAOC’s. Please let me know about this. Those dates would be 10/14-10/18, the model event is on the 18th. It would be a good week of training both in and out of the woods.

At NAOC’s All juniors on Red, Blue, Green, and Brown should check in with me before they race to go over race strategies, and talk about what to focus on for each race, it will be brief. After each race we will be reviewing courses possibly with the senior team. So find out when and where, closer to the race I will have more specific times.

Friday and Saturday Nights at NAOC we will have junior training meetings, to talk about going into winter training, gearing up for the spring, and developing individual and group goals for the upcoming year. We will be laying out training plans for anyone who does not already have one.

Please let me know as soon as you can about the trainings. Thanks
Erin

And to be clear...
Erin's junior training activities are open to all juniors, not just US.

Although it is tough to take kids out of school for that long, or do two round trips from the Midwest to the camp.... just sayin'... I guess we must start to have similar camps in our area and have the coaches coordinate with Erin

Bingo!

So the Laramie event receives suggestions that it's not convenient for some eastern juniors (even though it had no intentions to be a junior training event), and then the next junior big training event (open to all, and in the east, natch) requires either proximity, doubled travel costs, or flexibility to miss some school?

I know the thread title says NAOC but the first thing in Erin's post is about the Boggs Mtn A-meet junior training and I think he also has something planned for the mid-west so he's trying.

Oh, sorry, I wasn't ribbing Erin. I think his effort is commendable. I'm just amused that some people are calling for western clubs to be more convenient for eastern kids, but not calling for eastern clubs to be more convenient for western kids, that's all.

I don't think anybody's saying eastern or western, just week long events versus school in general. I have the same issues with summer events that are too early in June for your west coast kids. C'mon let's get over this bleeping east versus west chip that some people have on their shoulder and start working together. I think as a bottom line most of us want what works best for the most kids regardless of where they are from.

THANK YOU MIKE!!! You rock! It is the USA JUNIORS and for years we have been trying out best to make it that way. Erin has some really great ideas so let's all support him and work with him not against him.

I agree with Mike with the working together. My point about school and travel was precisely about trying to do more in various areas, locally, but do it in conjunction with Erin, so that he may be aware of developing juniors in all regions, whether they can afford or not to go to camps specifically held by Erin, or many A-meets for that matter.
As many coaches in many areas are volunteers, they may not have the extra time to develop all kind of practices and camps, it may look overwhelming. But if they were able to have cookie cutter practice schedules from Erin they could apply to maps in their area, it might bring out more people to cross the threshold of feeling regional coaching might be too big an effort to combine with work life.
Furthermore, as orienteering is not a school sport, there is no support for the kids within the school system if they take time off - at least in our school district the rules are pretty harsh about missing and making up the time. So again something speaking for more localized coaching efforts.

Actually East vs. West concept could be explored in a good way. Whenever there are enough JWOC wanna-be Juniors from East and West competing at A-meet make a competition out of it - East vs. West. Same could be done for Seniors

I never found it hard to miss a couple of days for a nice O-trip with the right paper work filled out. Oh and East vs. West coast lets go!!! #eastside

Is there a national league based on selected major events? It could have a team aspect between half a dozen regions.

Both Boggs Mountain and NAOC A meets will provide a great opportunity for clubs to touch base with Erin about junior development, including planning junior training events anywhere in the USA. Please take the initiative to speak with him. We do expect to raise money to support him traveling to different parts of the country over the next 12 months (so feel free to contribute to that fund - see me!). Even if Erin himself doesn't attend a particular junior training event, he and JTESC will be available to help with ideas for planning and connecting your juniors to the broader development team.

Various ideas have been floating around; these are the ones that I've heard:
* Erin may visit Seattle in the fall to connect with the school league there.
* Erin may attend the OCIN training I think that's in December
* I'd like to see if we could pull together junior (& senior?) training in Tucson in February. Peg Davis and I are directing a meet and are up for it; just have to see if any juniors could make it.
* Some talk of junior training on the amazing Laramie area terrain next year or the year after
* Possibility of an extended European trip for any juniors who want to come, next summer. Requires that they plan ahead and start saving now!
* Juniors have been invited to Sweden to train with Sam & Ross for a week

If you have an idea, please make it happen!

The OCIN training is Sat Nov 24; their A-event is Fri Nov 29 - Sun Dec 1.

Erin is planning on being at both.

I am already planning to be in Tucson that week (assuming you mean President's day week) and would be happy to help with another camp!
