fthfl stwrd rudy: :) weeeeell, for me historically, 7:40/mile is just a very fast pace to sustain for such a long time. I have been able to train to go faster for shorter distances, and to go longer distances, but not both at the same time. Probably a bunch of 10-12 mile tempo trail runs would be in order.

The course is fun and very popular with local runners, with a flat trail run segment linking a five mile rocky and steep middle section, but it is challenging. I hope you get a chance to run it.

Last year I was almost a minute a mile slower than my goal pace. The winner in my class passed me at the midpoint, and then put 5 minutes on me, so i know I have to work especially hard on that return leg. A couple years before that, my time was 5 minutes slower than that, so I have improved, but that increment of improvement just makes 15 minutes of improvement seem that much more intimidating.

Ok, I know - enough excuses. All you can do is try, right?

outthere: You've added the speed work so that should help...one thing my friend Jenny Spangler did for the '04 Olympic Marathon trials was add her speed work directly after a long run...she would run her 20 or so miles and then do 3 one mile repeats at race pace in the same training session...so perhaps some version of that for us old folks might work...like race pace speed work the day after a long run...I'm trying it a little with hill repeats...it won't get us to the Trials but might just train our legs and muscles to perform at a higher level when tired later in a long race........those are all the words of wisdom I have and while I have never experienced the results of this type of training....perhaps you will....That and "all you can do is try, right"?

fthfl stwrd rudy: perhaps you will too! thanks for the suggestion. it sounds like a good one, i will try it..... and what's this about 'us old folks'? Didn't someone call me out for talking like that?

outthere: thanks..perhaps it will work for me too...I really haven't trained seriously since I learned about it..so we will see if it helps this season

...Ok, forget the 'us old folks'...it is gramatically incorrect anyway!!!!We Youngens is better!
