Entry fees increase if your entry is not postmarked by Thursday, March 1.

I will also accept any entries delivered to me at the Umstead007 events this weekend without late fee, and any entries that shows up in my mail or at my door through Monday, March 5 without any late fee.

Event Information is posted on ocin.org.

T shirt design is now on the site. You won't want to miss this one.

The Pig will have 4 events in 3 days, including middle distance on Friday, 2 sprints on Saturday, and long/classic on Sunday. Miami Whitewater (Friday and Sunday) is one of OCIN's most open and runnable parks, so expect some fast times!

Mike, can you post list of entrants so far?
Feb 28, 2007 11:13 PM #
mindsweeper:
Yeah, I don't remember if I registered or not. I guess I should look at the blueprints in my checkbook.

I hope to post entrants soon. I'm trying to catch up on data entry. Sergey, you and your daughter are registered. Mindsweeper, I haven't seen anything from you yet.

Registration list thru Feb 28 mail and email is now posted. Sorry for the delay. I've been out of town 50% for the last 2 weeks.

That's pretty funny considering I bought the plane tickets weeks ago.

This is a reminder that special discount at the Event Headquarters hotel ends on March 1. Last time I checked there're still rooms available. So make your reservation before midnight Friday to get in on the deal!

I received over 80 entries today, so it will be a couple days before I get the registration list and other breaking details like final course lengths and notes updated. At this point, it looks like we will NOT have an organized dinner. Suitable halls were not available at an acceptable price, and we were still short on volunters to do cooking and cleanup.

If you still need to register, please be sure to include your SI number and be sure you put down a class (not just course color) for every event you want to enter. If you are entering a collegiate class, please use the special collegiate classes (Varsity Male, Junior Varsity Female, etc), not M-20, F Orange, etc... It is taking a lot of time to find out what some people really want to run.

Is there courses info available (length + climb) for Fri and Sun?
Mar 10, 2007 3:51 AM #
mikeminium:
Friday length has been posted for a couple days. Climb will be there the next time I update the site.
Friday is a hilly area. Friday climb: w-80, y-120, o-160, br-140, gr-180, r-240, bl-290.

Sunday's course planner is still going thru some changes, but the red and blue will be in the IOF long range. There's a lot of climb, but it tends to come dispersed in small pieces and moderate slopes,as opposed to a few big mega-climbs.

Lengths and climb for Friday and Sunday have been posted. Sunday's courses are still subject to a final round of review, so there could be slight changes.

Colorful insulated travel mugs will be sold throughout the weekend for $8 each (2 for $15) to benefit USOF's College Development Fund. The mugs depict a forest scene with a control. Please buy one or more to show your support for college orienteering and the World University Orienteering Championships Team. Many thanks to Stephanie Martineau and the USOF Board for making this fundraiser possible. Liz Kotowski will be selling the mugs each day and would welcome volunteers to help at the table.

I don't really care that start times haven't been posted yet, except that my departure time on Friday will be very dependent on it and I may not have too many more chances to check the site. Here's my question: if I show up after my start time, will it be a big deal to get a new one?
Mar 14, 2007 12:50 PM #
mikeminium:
I finished assignment of start times at 3:55 this morning (Wednesday). They still need to be checked against the many people who requested start times "near" family and friends. I hope to post them sometime after the packet prep. party this evening. But, don't worry, the Pig staff at the start line is always flexible if changes are needed. Especially Friday, we're very flexible with late arrivals. Starts are listed as 2-4, but we'll probably have an operational start area until close to 5. Course closing time will be 6:30 pm (2.5 hours from last scheduled start at 4:00), after which controls may begin to disappear.

The Pig Dinner - We will meet at 7 pm Saturday at Perkins Restaurant, SW corner of I-74, Exit #1 in Harrison, Ohio. Perkins has a wide range and inexpensive menu, including all-day breakfast menu, sandwiches, seafood and more. We'll have a party room reserved for orienteers, and we'll be showing the dvd of the 2006 Swiss Orienteering Week - nearly two hours of exciting competition and breath-taking scenery from the foot of the Matterhorn.

Been there, done that! Seems like you've been a bit more pressed this year than in the past, Mike. I'm sure the event will go well - I've had nothing but good experiences at OCIN events (at least organizationally; my own performances have been mixed to say the least).

Seems like you've been a bit more pressed this year than in the past, Mike.

The appearance of being pressed is probably because people like me are slow in getting information to Mike. He certainly seems relaxed.

I can't speak for Mike, but for me printing the Sunday maps last night (Tues), with Mike driving OCAD, from 7pm to about midnight was the point where I started to relax. Then I went to Mike's, picked up about half of my Sunday stands, then drove 45 minutes home. Answered my last e-mail around 2:30am.

Today (Wednesday) was probably my last night of good sleep until Sunday night. I was in the woods from 3pm to a little after 7pm (a little after sunset), and then I went to Mike's again for the packet party.

Tomorrow night (Thurs) is the SportIdent programming party. I'll probably be taking the afternoon off tomorrow to finish some other things before the party rather than after.

The crux day looks like Saturday. Saturday is going to be tough (organizationally). Two parks for competitors, but three for us.

I suppose we'll be able to relax around dark on Sunday. Everyone except Mike, because he'll probably be posting the results online.

Doesn't everyone doing big meets have a few late nights? Heck, I have late nights getting ready for local events.

Oh yes, it all sounds quite familiar. Last time I put on an A-meet that used two different venues on the same day was the only time. It makes for a pretty tough day on the organizers. Hope you boys have some good coffee!

As a last minute recommendation/warning:

The two sprint locations aren't too difficult to get to *if you have a map*. The maps in the packet should be all you need, but don't think you can just wing it.

And as a completely unrelated topic---There is a small theatre that shows mostly independent movies about 1 block from the second sprint park, Burnet Woods. Parking can be difficult, but they do validate the stubs of one of the parking lots nearby. Esquire Theatre. They have a sister theatre across town called Mariemont Theatre, but getting there requires serious map preparation, or a really good set of directions. (Their website maps are...inadequate...without some zooming out and panning around.)

I'd also add that there're plenty of restaurants to choose from in the Clifton area (Burnet Woods sprint) for lunch on Saturday.
Mar 16, 2007 11:37 AM #
mikeminium:
restaurants at Burnet Woods... look on Ludlow to the north and northwest of the park. Locator maps for all parks are at www.ocin.org, and you'll definitely want to print them if you are arriving on Saturday.
